What Is Varithena®?
Varithena® microfoam causes malfunctioning veins to collapse once administered. This triggers the rerouting of blood flow, causing unsightly veins to disappear overtime. Benefits of Varithena® include:
- Safe with little to no pain or discomfort
- Many patients see results after a single treatment
- Minimally invasive, no varicose vein surgery
- Procedure takes less than an hour
- Can be combined with other vein procedures for maximum results
How it Works
Varithena® microfoam is administered into malfunctioning veins. Because this is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment, it doesn’t require incisions. The doctor typically numbs the injection site and no additional anesthesia is required.

VARITHENA® FAQs
First, your doctor will administer Varithena® microfoam into the malfunctioning vein through a small catheter or by direct injection. Then, the microfoam fills the desired section of the vein. Once the diseased vein collapses, the doctor deactivates the microfoam, allowing blood flow to shift to healthier veins nearby.
Clinical trials have shown that Varithena® reduces varicose vein symptoms, such as:
- Heaviness
- Swelling
- Aches
- Throbbing
- Skin irritation and itching
Varithena® has also been shown to improve vein appearance in assessments conducted by patients and doctors.
Varithena® is a same–day clinical procedure that usually takes less than an hour. Once the treatment ends, patients can go home the same day.
Some patients may see results after a single treatment, while other patients may need additional treatment sessions depending on the number and size of the varicose veins. Treatments are typically separated by five days minimum.
It’s important to understand and follow your doctor’s post-treatment care recommendations and instructions, which may include:
- Resuming some light activities the same day as your treatments
- Avoiding heavy activities and workouts immediately after your procedure
- Walking at least 10 – 30 minutes a day for an entire month following the procedure
- Avoiding long periods of inactivity
- Keeping your post-treatment bandages dry and in place for 48 hours
- Wearing compression stockings on the treated leg for 2 weeks
You should wear compression stockings on the treated leg for 2 weeks following your treatment.
There are several common side effects that may result from Varithena®, including:
- Leg pain or discomfort that typically goes away within one week
- Bruising and/or swelling at the injection site
- Skin discoloration where the vein has been treated
- Skin irritation, including rashes, itching, red patches of skin, muscle spasms, and sore joints
In some cases, Varithena® can cause blood clots in deep veins. When this happens, your doctor will monitor you for signs of deep vein thrombosis, typically indicated by pain, swelling, and blueness of the treated leg. If these symptoms develop after your treatment, contact our center immediately. Very rarely, Varithena® can cause life-threatening allergic reactions. For this reason, it is essential to inform your doctor about any side effects you experience and those that do not go away.
We will help you to understand your coverage and contact your insurance provider to determine if you are eligible for treatment coverage. Coverage may depend on the severity of your varicose veins and your symptoms.
