Vein Pain: It’s About More Than Vanity

Book Now

When you think about varicose or spider veins, visions of unsightly popping blue lines on someone’s legs may come to mind. If you think of your own body first, relax.

It’s important to understand that many vein conditions are common and can be treated medically, with little discomfort and downtime, at the Montville MedSpa & Pain Center. But, moreover, varicose veins, spider veins and insufficient veins—which may cause RLS (restless leg syndrome) or swelling, cramping and pain—are nothing to be embarrassed about. These are fairly common conditions treated every day at our world-class medical spa.

These days, thanks to technology, people spend a lot of time sitting; this can have a negative effect on your veins. Additionally, exposure to the sun, pregnancy and family history can increase the likelihood of suffering from one of these painful vein conditions.

Don’t fret about your veins anymore. It’s time to take action—not only for vanity’s sake (which is completely understandable, too!) but for health reasons.

A Closer Look at Vein Health

As you are aware, our veins and arteries carry blood, which, obviously, is vital body tissue needed to keep your heart pumping and sustain life. Further, your body depends on healthy blood being transported in a timely fashion because blood delivers nutrients, especially oxygen, to your bones, muscles and more.

Veins play a special role in this circulatory process. They carry blood to the heart. If your veins are constricted or otherwise damaged, the heart will not be getting the blood supply it needs to do its job in the body. Further, when blood cannot travel properly in the body it pools in the legs causing pain and swelling. And, of course, that’s when you can see those all-too-visible veins on display.

Vein disease is usually a middle-aged person’s issue; almost 20 percent of men and 40 percent of women over age 50 have problems with damaged veins.

Bottom line: In addition to making you feel uncomfortable—physically and emotionally—damaged veins can be a life and death situation. If you are suffering from any vein damage that is restricting blood flow, you are at risk of developing blood clots which are often dangerous and could be life-threatening.

Are You at Risk for Vein Damage?

First things first, if you are overweight or smoke, now is the time to address these unhealthy issues. Both can contribute to vein disease.

Of course, there are some things that are out of your control. Age (over 50), have a history of blood clots or history of family members having vein damage, your best bet is to treat any vein conditions as soon as possible. (Note: Pregnant women are also at higher risk for vein damage. If you are pregnant, add some extra steps to your day if possible and if you do have vein issues, talk with the doctors at Montville Med Spa and Pain Center.)
