Ask about Botox and the conversation usually stays above the cheekbones: forehead lines, the “11s” between the brows and crow’s feet. Yet the neurotoxin page at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center lists several areas lower down that Botox and Dysport can treat for appropriate candidates, and they are the subject of this page. Both are FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A, and both work the same way, by relaxing the muscle that keeps creasing the skin.

The lower-face areas, one by one

• Bunny lines. The small creases that fan across the sides of the nose when you scrunch it or laugh.
• Chin dimpling. The dimpled, uneven surface some chins take on when the muscle there tightens.
• Lip lines. The fine vertical lines that gather above the mouth from pursing and talking.
• A lip flip. A small amount of Botox along the border of the upper lip relaxes the ring of muscle around the mouth, the orbicularis oris, so the upper lip rolls slightly outward and shows a little more of its pink. Nothing is added to the lip, and while it lasts a straw or certain words can feel a little different.
• Neck bands. The vertical cords at the front of the neck, known as platysmal bands.

Where filler is the better answer

A neurotoxin only helps lines that movement makes. Several lower-face changes come from volume instead, and a hyaluronic acid dermal filler is the tool for them:

• Smile lines and marionette lines, often treated with Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC or Vollure XC.
• A softening jawline or a receding chin, shaped with Juvéderm Volux XC.
• Lips that have thinned, restored with a lip filler such as Juvéderm Volbella XC, which also blurs fine lip lines.

Loosened skin along the jaw and neck is a third kind of problem, and a PDO thread lift adds the lift that neither injection gives. Plenty of plans combine two of these.

The appointment and the fortnight after

The injections take about 10 to 20 minutes with a fine-gauge needle, after a consultation about your goals and medical history. There is no downtime; leave the treated areas unrubbed for 24 hours. A little redness, swelling or a small bruise usually clears within hours to a few days. Softening starts after three to five days, the full effect arrives by day 10 to 14, and results typically last three to four months.
