Temporary, and that is the point
People sometimes hesitate over Botox because they worry about being stuck with a look they do not like. The reassuring part is built into how it behaves. Over the following months the body breaks the product down and the treated muscle gradually moves again, which makes a neurotoxin one of the more controllable and reversible choices in aesthetic medicine. Each visit is a chance to keep what worked and change what did not.
What is actually being switched off
Every frown and squint starts with a nerve telling a muscle to tighten. The chemical messenger carrying that instruction is acetylcholine, released where the nerve meets the muscle. Botox and Dysport, both botulinum toxin type A and both FDA-approved, block its release at that junction for a time, so the muscle relaxes and the skin over it smooths.
West Orange already knows this branch of medicine well: the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation is in the township. Rehabilitation medicine is the study of nerves, muscles and movement, and it is the specialty of Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, who founded Montville MedSpa & Pain Center and is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. She oversees every treatment here and leads the injecting team, which includes nurse practitioners Amy Natalicchio and Tanya Santoro.
Steering it from one visit to the next
- The week before: steer clear of blood thinners and alcohol for up to seven days, as the practice advises.
- The day itself: a series of small injections that takes roughly ten to twenty minutes, with no downtime afterwards.
- The next 24 hours: leave the treated area unmassaged.
- Days three to five: the first softening shows.
- Days ten to fourteen: the full effect has arrived, and this is the right moment to judge it.
- Three months on, at the earliest: the next touch-up. With steady maintenance, many people find their results last longer, as the muscle grows used to staying relaxed.
If something feels off
A little redness, swelling or a bruise at a needle point usually fades within hours to a few days, and ice helps. A mild headache or a heavy feeling in the treated area tends to pass in a day or two. Rarely, a brow or eyelid droops slightly if the product travels, which is exactly the risk that careful anatomical placement keeps low. Even then, it is temporary.
The road from West Orange
From Prospect Avenue, I-280 west carries you most of the way. Leave at the New Road exit and follow Changebridge Road north to Route 202, where 624 Main Road is a short way along — roughly 25 minutes and 15 miles without traffic.
West Orange patients ask
Should I choose Botox or Dysport? Both work the same way but differ in formulation and spread. Your injector recommends one after watching how your face moves.
Is it only for wrinkles? No. The same practice uses neurotoxins for TMJ tension, chronic migraines and excessive sweating, each assessed on its own terms.
What is the youngest age you treat? Adults 18 and older. Some people in their mid-to-late twenties start early, with conservative doses, to slow lines from setting in.
