What a filler visit actually involves

Most people booking filler for the first time have a clear idea of the result they want and a much vaguer one of how they will get there. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center the process follows the same careful order every time, and the same provider sees you through your consultation, your treatment and your follow-up. Here it is, start to finish.

Before anything is injected

The consultation is a private, one-to-one conversation. Your provider asks what bothers you, reviews your medical history and studies your face: where volume has thinned, how the features balance and how everything moves when you talk. High-resolution photos may be taken to record your starting point. Out of that comes a plan naming the areas and the products, perhaps Juvéderm Voluma XC for the cheeks, Volux XC for the chin and jaw, or Volbella XC for a soft change in the lips, and a full cost estimate, which depends on the number of syringes, the areas and the product.

Two things are worth raising at this stage: a tendency to cold sores, since a flare-up is one of filler’s known risks, and any blood-thinning medicine you take.

On the day, in order

1. Mapping. Injection points are marked on your face so placement is accurate and symmetrical, and the skin is cleansed.
2. Numbing. A topical anesthetic cream sits for 15 to 30 minutes; most modern fillers also contain lidocaine.
3. Placement. The gel goes in through a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula, with minimal pressure. Depending on the areas, this takes about 20 to 45 minutes.
4. Modeling. Your provider massages and shapes the gel so it blends with the surrounding tissue.
5. Animation. You are asked to smile and frown while the area is gently worked, and symmetry is checked from several angles, so the result moves with you.

The days after

Mild swelling, redness or bruising usually fades within one to three days, and an ice pack helps. Keep your hands off the area for three to six hours, skip strenuous activity for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid alcohol, blood thinners and strong sun for the first day. The full result shows once swelling has gone, within days to two weeks, and a follow-up one to two weeks after treatment is when any touch-up is made.
