The other place a week settles
Neck and shoulder tension gets most of the attention, yet plenty of people carry their week lower down. Hours in a desk chair or behind the wheel, an afternoon of raking and lifting, or a long walk on Patriots’ Path, which finishes its run in East Hanover along Ridgedale Avenue, can leave the low back stiff and the hips unwilling to turn. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center a session can be given over to that lower half of the body, and Maryann Constantino, LMT, the practice’s licensed massage therapist, shapes the work around what you describe on the day.
Putting the session together
- Deep tissue at the core of the hour, 60 or 90 minutes. Slow, deliberate pressure into the deeper muscle and the connective tissue wrapped around it, for tightness that has started to limit how you bend and twist. If the whole back needs attention, the 90-minute booking leaves time to reach the hips as well.
- Hot stones, added on. Warmth that coaxes tight muscle to loosen before firmer work begins.
- Thirty minutes of trigger point therapy, added on. Concentrated pressure for a single knot in one muscle group that keeps grabbing.
- Swedish instead, 60 or 90 minutes, when stress is the bigger complaint than stiffness.
Every add-on is an additional cost. A deep tissue session can leave you aware of it for a day or so, rather like the morning after a demanding workout.
When the back needs the doctor
Massage may ease muscle tension and discomfort for some people, but back pain has more than one source. Most of it comes from muscle strain, inflammation or mechanical stress. Pain that keeps returning, grows worse, limits what you can do, or travels into the hips, buttocks or legs deserves an examination rather than another massage. The practice is a pain center as well: Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, leads non-surgical care for back pain, hip pain and sciatica, and anyone already in her pain management care can book massage in the same building.
Before you get on the table
Show Maryann where the pain sits and whether it spreads anywhere. Mention a recent injury or operation, a blood-thinning medicine, an earlier blood clot, a pregnancy or osteoporosis, since each one changes how firm the pressure ought to be. Drink some water through the day, keep the meal beforehand light, and arrive a little early so the forms do not eat into your time.
From East Hanover to Towaco
Ridgedale Avenue, Route 10 and Parsippany Road bring you to I-287 north. At Exit 47 bear onto Main Road and turn left; our door at 624 is about a mile and a half further. The trip covers around 13 miles, close to 21 minutes without traffic, so the ride home afterwards is a short one.
East Hanover clients ask
How much should deep tissue hurt? Firm pressure is the point; a sharp or catching pain is not, so speak up and Maryann will ease off.
Do you see clients at weekends? On Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, and on Tuesdays the last sessions run until 7 pm.
What will a session cost? That depends on the massage, its length and any add-ons you choose, and the front desk can give you current prices and package options.
The whole menu is on the massage therapy page, and Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book? helps you decide between the two.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
I've had countless massages over the years, but none have ever truly addressed the root of my lower back pain until I saw MaryAnn. Her deep understanding of anatomy and her ability to pinpoint exactly where the pain was coming from made all the difference. Not only was the massage incredibly effective, but it was also one of the most relaxing experiences. Hands down, the best massage I've ever received. I HIGHLY recommend MaryAnn to anyone looking for real relief and true expertise!
