If you have never had a massage
Plenty of people put off a first massage because they are unsure what happens in the room. None of it is complicated, and knowing the order of things in advance makes it far easier to relax once you are on the table. Here is how a first session at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center comes together.
Before you arrive
- Pick a starting point. If stress is the main reason, or you simply want to learn what massage feels like, a 60-minute Swedish massage is the natural choice. If one area has been nagging you for weeks, deep tissue is aimed at that kind of settled-in tightness. Still torn between them? Say so when you arrive, because each session is planned around what you tell us.
- Dress for comfort. Wear something easy to move in, drink water during the day and avoid a large meal just beforehand.
- Give yourself a few spare minutes for the paperwork, so it does not come out of your time on the table.
In the room
- A conversation comes first. Maryann Constantino, LMT, the practice’s licensed massage therapist, asks what is bothering you and what you would like from the hour. Mention medical conditions, recent injuries or surgery, and above all a blood thinner, an earlier blood clot, a pregnancy or osteoporosis, since firm pressure is not right for everyone.
- The pressure is yours to change. Maryann adjusts pressure and technique as she works. If anything feels like too much, tell her; a muscle that is guarding against discomfort will not release.
- Extras are optional. Thirty minutes of trigger point therapy, hot stones, reflexology, Reiki, a craniosacral scalp massage or CBD oil can be worked into the session, each at an additional cost.
Afterwards
- Expect to feel loose. A Swedish massage tends to leave people relaxed and a little sleepy.
- Expect some soreness after deep tissue. Feeling it for a day or so is normal, rather like the morning after a tough gym session, so a first deep tissue booking is best kept away from the day before a big event.
The drive from Parsippany
Because Parsippany borders Montville Township, the ride home is short when you are feeling pleasantly heavy. Our office at 624 Main Road in Towaco is about eight miles from Parsippany, roughly 11 minutes without traffic by way of I-287 north and Route 202.
Parsippany clients ask
Should I book 60 or 90 minutes? For a first Swedish massage, an hour suits most people. When deep tissue has to cover the whole back as well as the neck and shoulders, 90 minutes lets your therapist work without hurrying.
Is lymphatic drainage a good first massage? It is a different kind of session, gentle and rhythmic, aimed at certain kinds of swelling and at recovery after some surgeries. An individual assessment decides whether it suits you.
Do I have to be a pain patient to book? No. Massage here is for anyone after relaxation, relief, wellness or recovery support, and patients already in pain management can add it to their care in the same office.
Can I come on a weekday evening? On Tuesdays, until 7 pm, and there are Saturday morning sessions until 1.
The full menu is on the massage therapy page, Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book? helps you choose, and there is more about the area on our Parsippany page.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
I have been to see Dr. D'Alessio over the past 5 years. I especially drive for over an hour, she and her whole office are simply the BEST! She has done my leg veins, Botox and now I see her for my GLP weight loss treatments, she is truly AMAZING and CARING! She will work with your insurance and help you find the best course of treatment to bring the cost down, if possible. She is always conservative, attentive, kind and has so much patience when listening to your exact needs. I would never go anywhere else. I trust her and her staff fully!
