Two problems that share one name
“Acne” covers two different jobs. One is the skin that is breaking out now: blocked pores, inflamed spots, oil that never seems to stop. The other is what breakouts leave behind once they have cleared, the uneven texture and the marks that outlast the spots by years. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center each job has its own set of treatments, and a plan usually deals with the first before it moves on to the second.
While breakouts are active
- Acne facial with blue light. Your skin is cleansed, exfoliated and toned, blocked pores are extracted, and a blue light device, which uses no UV, is aimed at the bacteria behind breakouts before a calming mask and moisturizer finish the visit. Monthly visits can be enough for mild acne; more stubborn skin may be booked more often.
- Teen facial. Built for younger skin, with a gentle non-foaming cleanser, steam to soften the pores, careful extractions and a non-comedogenic moisturizer. Before leaving, the teen is shown a home routine and given ways to resist picking.
- Back facial. Breakouts on the back are hard to reach yourself, so this one uses diamond-tipped microdermabrasion, extractions and a custom mask. It suits people whose workouts keep the skin there congested.
- HydraFacial. A deep cleanse that clears congested pores and is gentle enough for sensitive skin, with no downtime.
Once the skin has calmed
- Microneedling and Vivace RF microneedling. Fine needles, with radiofrequency heat in Vivace’s case, prompt new collagen that can soften acne scars. Expect a course of three to six visits, four to six weeks apart, then yearly maintenance. Redness like a mild sunburn usually fades within a few hours to a couple of days.
- The PRP “vampire” facial. Platelet-rich plasma from a small sample of your own blood is applied during microneedling to help improve scars.
- PRX. A needle-free gel worked into the skin by hand, used for the look of acne scars with little or no visible peeling.
Who reads your skin
Licensed medical esthetician Kristen Marucci has spent more than 20 years as a skincare specialist and starts from your skin type, so a teenager with breakouts and an adult with years of sun damage leave with different plans. Shannon Glinsky, who has also worked in plastic surgery offices, pairs office treatments with a home routine drawn from ZO Skin Health, SkinCeuticals and SkinMedica. The practice’s PRP treatments are overseen by its founder, Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD.
Leaving the borough westward
Caldwell is home to Caldwell University, a Catholic liberal arts college, and from anywhere in town Bloomfield Avenue is the road west toward Route 46. Hook Mountain Road and Pine Brook Road then lead north to Towaco and our office at 624 Main Road, about eight and a half miles and close to 18 minutes without traffic.
Caldwell clients ask
Should I stop my prescription acne cream before a facial? Do not stop anything without asking the doctor who prescribed it. Do tell your esthetician what you use, because the products chosen for your facial depend on it.
Can I book on a Saturday? Yes, between 9 am and 1 pm. Tuesday appointments also run until 7 pm.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
I had an incredible experience with Nurse Practitioner - Tanya at Montville MedSpa! From the moment I walked in, the office staff and Tanya made me feel completely at ease. She took the time to explain everything, answered ALL my questions (I had a LOT), and made sure I felt comfortable before proceeding with my first treatment. Her technique is gentle and precise — I barely felt a thing! The results are exactly what I was hoping for: natural, refreshed, and subtle.
