Botox, minus the hearsay

Botox is the most recognized name among wrinkle relaxers, so nearly everyone has heard something about it, from a sitcom, a group chat or a relative, and a fair amount of it is wrong. Five claims come up again and again; here are our injectors’ answers.

• “It fills in the wrinkle.” Nothing is added under the skin. Botox and Dysport, both botulinum toxin type A, keep a nerve’s chemical messenger from reaching one chosen muscle, and the skin over that resting muscle stops folding so deeply.
• “I will look frozen.” Only the muscles making the lines you dislike are treated, and the dose is judged so that you can still raise your brows and smile.
• “Once you start, you are stuck with it.” Your body breaks the product down over the coming months, so results typically hold for three to four months, and if you decide not to return, movement simply comes back.
• “It is only for deep lines.” Some patients in their mid-to-late twenties begin with deliberately small doses, before creases have a chance to set.
• “It is purely cosmetic.” For suitable candidates the same product is used for jaw tension and TMJ, chronic migraines and heavy underarm sweating.

What your consultation weighs up

Before a plan is drawn, your injector looks at the details that change it. Does the line appear only when you frown, or does it stay when your face is still? A crease that remains at rest usually reflects lost volume, which dermal fillers answer better. When were you last treated, and with which product? Leaving at least three months between touch-ups is the standard advice. Is a wedding on the calendar? The complete effect takes 10 to 14 days to develop. And in the week before, alcohol and blood thinners are best avoided, though a prescribed one should only be paused on its prescriber’s advice.

Out of the Caldwells, off the interstate

Exit signs on Interstate 80 direct drivers to “The Caldwells”, yet the route OpenStreetMap suggests from the borough to our office stays off the interstate altogether. It follows Bloomfield Avenue west to Route 46, then Hook Mountain Road and Pine Brook Road up into Towaco, where Main Road leads to number 624. That comes to roughly eight and a half miles, close to 18 minutes without traffic.

Caldwell patients ask

I was treated somewhere else a few weeks ago. Can I top up with you? The usual guidance is to wait at least three months between treatments. Bring the date and the name of the product to your consultation, and your injector can plan your next visit from there.

Can the cords in my neck be treated as well? Neck bands, known as platysmal bands, are among the additional areas a neurotoxin can address for appropriate candidates. Whether yours are suitable is settled at the consultation.

What should I do straight afterwards? Carry on with your day, but keep your fingers off the treated area for 24 hours. Any redness, swelling or small bruise tends to clear within hours to a few days, and an ice pack helps.
