A medicine that works while you take it
Semaglutide and tirzepatide are generally treated as long-term medications. They help for as long as you are on them, and in published follow-up studies many people regained a substantial share of the weight they had lost within a year of stopping semaglutide. That is not a reason to avoid them. It is a reason to think about the whole arc from the outset: the consultation, the months of adjustment, and what happens once you are near your goal. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center that arc is planned with you, not left to chance.
Two gut hormones, explained
Semaglutide copies GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone your gut releases after a meal. Tirzepatide acts on GLP-1 and on the receptor for a second gut hormone, GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide), which is involved in insulin release and energy balance. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Ozempic® and Wegovy®, and tirzepatide in Mounjaro® and Zepbound®. In each pair, the first brand is approved for type 2 diabetes and the second for chronic weight management.
The arc of a plan
- The consultation. Our medical professionals review your health, goals and medical history and decide which medication, if either, suits you.
- The build-up. The weekly injection starts at a low dose and is stepped up gradually, with check-ins along the way to adjust the dose, the eating advice and the exercise guidance.
- The long view. Staying on, adjusting or stopping is a decision made with your provider, never abruptly on your own. The habits you build around food, activity and sleep while on the medication are what carry you afterwards.
About the boxed warning
Both medicines carry an FDA boxed warning because they caused thyroid C-cell tumors in studies in rodents. It is not known whether they do the same in humans, but neither is used by anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. A lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing or shortness of breath is a reason to call your provider promptly.
Boonton Township patients ask
How far is the office? About six and a half miles on local roads, by way of Powerville Road, Rockaway Valley Road and Taylortown Road to Main Road in Towaco. Roughly 15 minutes without traffic.
Does the plan include anything besides the injection? Yes. Every plan covers the medication and its dosage together with dietary recommendations and exercise guidance, and regular check-ins are built in from the start.
Is either medicine used in pregnancy? No. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy.
Is there a weekend appointment? Saturday mornings, from 9 until 1.
Our side-by-side guide, semaglutide vs. tirzepatide, compares the two medicines, and the weight-loss injections page has the rest.

Shannon from the MedSpa is absolutely amazing! She took the time to really understand my skin and helped me figure out exactly what it needs. She recommended products that feel incredible on my skin and made the whole experience feel personalized. The room was so relaxing, and everything about the appointment was perfect. I’m someone who usually pushes off getting facials, but after finally getting one done, it was 100% worth it. Overall a 10/10 experience!
