Lip filler, from the chair to settled
Lip filler is among the most requested treatments at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center, and the questions people bring about it are rarely about the needle. They are about the two weeks that follow: the swelling, the first night’s sleep, when lipstick can go back on. This page follows a lip treatment from the appointment to the day the result has settled.
Before the appointment
Your provider begins with what you want to change, which might be fullness lost over the years, shape and symmetry, a sharper cupid’s bow or simply better hydration. The product follows from that answer. Juvéderm Volbella XC gives the softest change, Juvéderm Ultra XC adds more visible volume, and Revanesse Versa is a further hyaluronic acid option that plumps both lips and fine lines. If you are prone to cold sores, say so, because a flare-up is one of the known risks of filler. Mention any blood-thinning medicine as well, and check with the doctor who prescribed it before pausing anything.
The first 48 hours
- Ice in short spells helps keep the swelling down.
- Hands off. Leave your lips untouched and unrubbed for the first several hours.
- No lipstick, gloss or other lip products for at least a day.
- Sleep on your back with your head raised on an extra pillow or two, rather than on your side or front, for the first night or two.
- Skip straws and anything else you would have to suck on while the gel settles.
- Put off the workout, the sauna and the hot tub for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid alcohol and strong sun for the first day.
Week one and week two
Swelling usually peaks over the first two or three days and then fades steadily across a week or two, which is why your lips can look fuller on day two than they will on day ten. Any bruising tends to follow the same course. A follow-up one to two weeks after treatment is when your provider looks at the settled result and makes any touch-up. If a wedding or photographs are on the calendar, book at least two weeks ahead of them.
Call the office if lumps or unevenness are still there after two weeks, or if you notice signs of infection such as spreading redness, heat, pus or a fever.
Fairfield patients ask
Who will treat me? Every filler treatment is supervised by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, whose training covers facial anatomy and vascular safety. Nurse practitioners Amy Natalicchio and Tanya Santoro inject to the standard she sets.
How far is it from Fairfield? About five and a half miles on local roads: Hollywood Avenue to Horseneck Road, Pine Brook Road north into Towaco, then Whitehall Road onto Main Road. Roughly 13 minutes without traffic, which keeps a follow-up visit easy.
Can the lines around my mouth be treated at the same visit? Often, yes. Filler can soften fine lines around the lips, while Botox or Dysport relaxes the lip lines that movement creates; your provider will say which suits yours.
Is Saturday possible? Saturdays run from 9 am to 1 pm.
More detail is in our lip filler aftercare guide and on the dermal fillers page, or see our page for Fairfield.
