A smaller appetite takes some getting used to
Semaglutide and tirzepatide, the two weight-loss injections prescribed at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center, slow the rate at which food leaves your stomach and turn down the signals that make you hungry. That is how they help. It is also why the early weeks can feel odd: a plate that used to be an ordinary dinner may suddenly be more than you can finish. Most of the side effects people notice, chiefly nausea, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting, come from that same slowing, so small changes at the table go a long way.
Eating on a GLP-1, day to day
- Serve less than you think you want. You can always go back for more, and eating past fullness is the most common trigger for nausea.
- Give each meal time. Put the fork down between bites so the feeling of fullness can catch up.
- Go easy on fried, rich and very sugary food, which many people find the hardest to tolerate.
- Stay upright for a while after eating instead of lying straight down; it helps with both nausea and heartburn.
- Keep bland standbys in the kitchen, such as toast, crackers, rice, broth or plain yogurt, for the days your stomach is unsettled.
- Carry a water bottle. A smaller appetite often means you drink less as well, and if constipation sets in, add fiber gradually through vegetables, fruit, beans and whole grains.
- Be careful with alcohol, which can make nausea and a poor appetite worse.
If symptoms are not easing, tell your provider rather than skipping or changing a dose yourself; the pace of your dose increases can be looked at again.
Looking after muscle and hair
Whatever the method, some of the weight you lose is lean tissue. Eating enough protein and adding strength or resistance exercise help protect muscle, which is why your plan includes dietary recommendations and exercise guidance alongside the medication. Hair shedding has also been reported after fast or significant weight loss, semaglutide included, so mention it at a check-in if you notice it.
Check-ins on local roads
Fairfield and Montville Township meet at the line between Essex and Morris counties. Hollywood Avenue leads you to Horseneck Road, Pine Brook Road takes you north into Towaco, and a short hop along Whitehall Road puts you on Main Road beside our office at number 624. Allow about 13 minutes without traffic for roughly five and a half miles.
Fairfield patients ask
What will my provider want to know first? Your full medical history, especially any pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems or diabetic eye disease, and every medicine you take. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 rules both medications out, and so does pregnancy.
I take insulin. Does that change anything? Tell your provider. When these injections are combined with insulin or other medicines that lower blood sugar, shakiness, sweating, confusion or a racing heartbeat can be a sign that your sugar has dropped too low.
When could I come in? Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9 to 5, Tuesday from 10 until 7, Friday from 9 to 4, and Saturday mornings from 9 to 1.

Shannon from the MedSpa is absolutely amazing! She took the time to really understand my skin and helped me figure out exactly what it needs. She recommended products that feel incredible on my skin and made the whole experience feel personalized. The room was so relaxing, and everything about the appointment was perfect. I’m someone who usually pushes off getting facials, but after finally getting one done, it was 100% worth it. Overall a 10/10 experience!
