When people keep asking whether you have been sleeping, sleep may have nothing to do with it. The midface is one of the first areas of the face to lose volume with age. As the cheeks flatten, shadows collect under the eyes and the folds beside the mouth look deeper, so a face can read as worn out even after a good night. Cheeks first

Juvéderm Voluma XC is the gel used to give projection and lift back to the cheekbones. Placed across the cheekbone, the mid-cheek and the outer cheek, it restores the contour that frames the face. Because that tissue supports what sits beneath it, the same placement can lift the area below a little and soften the nasolabial folds. Cheeks also move far less than lips, so they hold filler longer; Voluma can last up to 18 to 24 months there.

Under the eyes

The tear troughs are one of the most delicate places filler goes. As the fat in that area flattens over the years, hollows form that show up as dark circles, a bluish tinge or a permanently tired look. Gel placed with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula eases those shadows and brings back a brighter, more rested appearance.

• It settles gradually, with the finished look developing over one to four weeks as early swelling fades.

Hyaluronic acid already occurs naturally in your skin and attracts water, so besides restoring volume it gently hydrates the skin above, and its antioxidant properties help shield skin from free-radical damage. Will I see a difference straight away? You will notice a change before you leave, but judge the result only once swelling has gone, which for the under-eyes can take up to four weeks.

What should I avoid afterwards? Keep your hands off the treated area for three to six hours, skip strenuous exercise for a day or two, and steer clear of alcohol, blood thinners and strong sun for the first 24 hours.
