That range is wide for a reason: the part of the face being treated matters as much as the product. Areas that move all day break filler down sooner, and steadier ones hold it longer. Knowing that before your first syringe makes the upkeep easier to plan, and it is one of the things a consultation here covers, along with your goals, your medical history and a full cost estimate.

Area by area

Lips. Juvéderm Volbella XC for a subtle result and blurred lip lines, or Ultra XC for visibly fuller, more defined lips. Lips are in motion constantly, from talking to eating, so they generally need maintaining more often than anywhere else.

Cheeks. Juvéderm Voluma XC restores the lift and projection of the cheekbone and midface. With little movement there, it is the longest-lived of the lot: up to 18 to 24 months in the right areas.

Chin and jawline. Juvéderm Volux XC adds structure and definition along the chin and jaw. Like the cheeks, this is a low-movement area, so results tend to hold longer than lips.

Under the eyes. The tear trough is treated with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula. It is a delicate area that takes time to settle: the result develops over one to four weeks as swelling goes down, and touch-ups are usually advised every 6 to 12 months.

Smile lines and marionette lines. Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC or Vollure XC smooth the folds running from the nose to the mouth corners and down from the corners toward the chin, without stopping the face from moving naturally.

What upkeep usually looks like

• One to two weeks after treatment: a follow-up visit may be booked to check the settled result and make small touch-ups.
• Every four to six months: fine-tuning appointments are suggested to keep things balanced.
• Around nine to twelve months: the point at which most patients book a fuller touch-up.

Because hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, nothing about that schedule is locked in. A result can be adjusted, or reversed, if it ever needs to be.
