Most first conversations about lip filler begin with how much. A better starting point is what kind of change you want, because lips can be improved in ways that have little to do with size: a crisper outline, a clearer cupid’s bow, two sides that match more closely, or lips that simply look less dry. Four things a lip plan can change

• The outline. Over the years the vermilion border, the edge where the colored part of the lip meets the skin, tends to blur. Tiny amounts of filler traced along that edge bring the definition back without adding much fullness to the lip itself.
• The cupid’s bow. The double curve along the top of the upper lip can be sharpened to give the whole mouth more shape.
• Balance. Where one lip, or one side, has less volume, filler goes only to the place that is lacking. The goal is a mouth that looks balanced, not a perfect mirror image.
• Fullness and hydration. Hyaluronic acid holds on to water, so even a modest treatment can leave lips looking smoother and better hydrated.

Choosing the gel

Lip products are not interchangeable. Juvéderm Volbella XC, the most delicate lip filler the practice uses, gives a soft change and blurs fine lip lines. Juvéderm Ultra XC produces bolder contour and more noticeable volume. Revanesse Versa is a further option that plumps lips and fine lines alike. All three are FDA-approved hyaluronic acid fillers, which means an enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve them should a correction ever be needed.

Starting small

A first treatment does not have to be the last word. Starting with a small amount and building gradually is often recommended: your provider looks at the settled result at a follow-up a week or two later, and more is added only if you want it. That pace makes an overdone look far less likely. Filler is placed by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, who leads the injector team, or by nurse practitioners Amy Natalicchio and Tanya Santoro.

Getting here from Totowa

Will my lips look swollen at first? For a few days, yes. Lips swell readily, so the shape is judged only once that has gone down, usually somewhere between a few days and two weeks. Our lip filler swelling timeline shows the usual course.

Can I bring pictures of lips I like? Please do. Reference photos help you and your injector agree on what “subtle” or “full” means to you, and the plan is then adapted to the lips you actually have.

Is there anything that rules me out? Filler here is for adults 22 and older, the age the products are FDA-approved for. Put treatment off while pregnant or breastfeeding, and say so if you get cold sores, because a flare-up is one of the known risks.

Can I come after work? Tuesday is the late day here, with the last appointments at 7 in the evening.
