When nothing hurts and you still need it
Not every massage has a problem to fix. Sometimes the reason is a long run of work, nights of poor sleep or a head that will not switch off. For that, the session to book at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is usually a Swedish massage, and the hour belongs to all of you rather than to one stubborn knot.
What a Swedish massage does
It is a full-body massage of long, flowing strokes and gentle pressure, meant to calm the nervous system and get the circulation moving. Breathing slows, the shoulders come down from around the ears, and a lot of people drift off partway through. Sessions run 60 or 90 minutes, and for pure unwinding an hour suits most people. It is also the natural first booking for anyone who has never had a massage, because you find out what pressure you enjoy before trying anything firmer.
Add-ons for a calmer hour
Each add-on carries an additional cost and is worked into your session rather than booked separately:
- Hot stones — smooth, heated stones used to warm tight muscles, so the tightness eases more readily.
- Reflexology — pressure on points of the feet that the practice describes as linked to the body’s organs and systems, aimed at balance and lower stress.
- Reiki — an energy-based technique, gentle enough to fold into a massage, meant to help you relax and let go emotionally.
- CBD oil — oil made from hemp, worked into the massage for an added sense of calm.
- Scalp massage — craniosacral work on the head, neck and spine, aimed at stress, headaches and mental clarity.
Getting ready
Wear comfortable clothes, drink some water beforehand and avoid a heavy meal just before you come. Arriving a few minutes early leaves time for the paperwork, so none of it comes out of your session. Tell your therapist about any medical condition, recent injury or surgery, a pregnancy or a blood-thinning medicine, and the session will be planned around it.
Your therapist
Sessions are with Maryann Constantino, LMT, a licensed massage therapist whose approach aims at physical, mental and spiritual balance as well as easing tension. She asks how you are before she starts and adjusts pressure and technique as she works, so if you would like it lighter or firmer at any point, simply say. Because the practice is also a pain center, anyone already in its pain management care can book massage in the same office.
Totowa clients ask
How far is it? About eight and a half miles: Route 46 west, Route 23 north, then Mountainview Boulevard onto Route 202 through Lincoln Park to Main Road in Towaco. Allow roughly 15 minutes without traffic.
Can I relax and still have one sore spot worked on? Yes. Adding 30 minutes of trigger point therapy gives a single knot firm attention while the rest of your Swedish massage stays gentle.
I have just had surgery. Is massage a good idea? Lymphatic drainage, a gentle 60-minute massage, may help with swelling and recovery after certain procedures, and an individual assessment decides whether it suits you.
Which days can I book? Monday to Saturday, with sessions on Tuesdays available until 7 pm.
If you are torn between the two main massages, Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book? can help, and the whole menu is on the massage therapy page.
