Start from the date and count backwards

A good share of filler appointments are booked with an occasion in mind: a wedding, a milestone birthday, family photographs, a reunion. Filler shows a change before you leave the chair, but the face you see that afternoon is not the finished one. Swelling has to settle first, and how long that takes depends on where the gel went. How far ahead, area by area

• Lips. Lips swell readily, usually most on the second and third day, and feel soft and settled by around ten to fourteen days. The practice’s guidance is to allow at least two weeks before a special event.
• Cheeks, chin and jawline. Structural gels such as Juvéderm Voluma XC and Volux XC are placed where the face moves less. The final look shows once swelling has resolved, typically within days to two weeks.
• Smile lines and marionette lines. Gels such as Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC or Vollure XC follow the same days-to-two-weeks pattern.
• Under the eyes. Tear-trough filler is among the most delicate work the practice does, and its result develops over one to four weeks. Give this area a full month.

Leave room for the follow-up

A review one to two weeks after treatment is when your provider looks at the settled result and makes any small touch-up. Booking your first appointment about a month ahead of the date means that review, and anything it adds, also has time to settle. If something looks uneven while the gel beds in, the follow-up is the moment to correct it, and hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme, hyaluronidase, if ever needed.

Keeping bruising to a minimum

Mild swelling, redness or bruising where the needle went in usually fades within one to three days, and an ice pack helps. The practice’s bruising guide suggests skipping alcohol for a day or two beforehand, and any blood-thinning medicine or supplement should be paused only with the prescribing doctor’s approval. Afterwards, keep your hands off the area for three to six hours, leave hard exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and avoid alcohol, blood thinners and strong sun for the first day.

If the occasion is months away

Results are maintained rather than permanent. Lips use filler up fastest, a fine-tuning visit every four to six months is common, and most people book a full touch-up every nine to twelve months, so a refresh can be timed to the calendar too.
