A treatment that starts with a blood draw
Several MedSpa treatments at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center use the same raw material: platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, made from a small sample of your own blood. The sample is spun in a centrifuge, which concentrates the platelets and the growth factors they carry, and that plasma is then used where the treatment needs it. The practice’s PRP work is overseen by its founder, Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, who also uses PRP on the pain side of the practice, in PRP joint injections.
On the face: the PRP facial
The PRP “vampire” facial pairs microneedling with plasma. The name comes from using your own blood components; nothing more dramatic than a routine draw is involved. In order:
- The skin is cleansed and a numbing cream left on for about 15 minutes.
- Blood is drawn from your arm and spun to separate the plasma.
- Microneedling opens tiny channels in the skin while the PRP is applied, so it reaches deeper.
- PRP is spread across the face, with extra attention where it is needed.
- A calming finish, often a hyaluronic acid product with vitamins, and ice for any swelling.
It is aimed at fine lines, uneven tone, sun damage, texture and the marks acne leaves. Expect redness like a mild sunburn that usually fades within a few hours to a couple of days.
With Vivace RF microneedling
PRP can also be added to Vivace RF microneedling, which delivers radiofrequency energy through fine needles. The plasma is applied as the skin is microneedled, to boost collagen and help improve scars. Your provider will tell you whether adding it suits your skin.
On the scalp: PRP hair restoration
For thinning hair, PRP hair restoration places the plasma into the scalp by injection to stimulate follicles that have gone quiet. Men and women are both treated, and the best candidates have mild to moderate loss.
- The visit: about 90 minutes, including a draw of roughly 20 to 50 mL, optional numbing cream, the injections and a light scalp massage.
- Afterwards: mild soreness or tenderness is possible; avoid washing your scalp or strenuous exercise for a day or two.
- Results: often visible within three to six months, with maintenance treatments every three months to keep them.
It can help manage alopecia areata but is not a cure for it, and any blood thinners should be discussed beforehand.
Who carries it out
Licensed medical estheticians Kristen Marucci and Shannon Glinsky perform microneedling, Vivace and the PRP facial, and Shannon builds home routines from ZO Skin Health, SkinCeuticals and SkinMedica to look after the skin between visits.
The drive
About twelve miles: Route 23 north out of Verona, Route 202 through Lincoln Park, and 624 Main Road in Towaco, roughly 21 minutes without traffic.
Verona clients ask
Does the blood draw hurt? It is quick and generally pain-free, much like a routine lab test.
Can I go back to work afterwards? Most people resume normal activities right away after PRP for hair, and soon after a PRP facial.
When are you open? Six days a week, until 7 pm on Tuesdays and 1 pm on Saturdays.
