The question before the prescription
Montville MedSpa & Pain Center prescribes two weekly weight-loss injections. Semaglutide imitates GLP-1, a hormone the gut releases after eating; tirzepatide works on GLP-1 and on a second receptor, GIP. Before either is discussed, though, a consultation answers a plainer question: are you someone these medicines are meant for? Our medical professionals review your health, your goals and your history, and the answer is sometimes yes, sometimes not yet, and sometimes a different treatment altogether.
Who they are generally for
- Adults whose BMI indicates overweight or obesity. For reference, the FDA approval for Wegovy covers a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol.
- People for whom diet and exercise alone have stopped working, despite a real effort.
- Anyone ready to change their routine as well. Every plan pairs the injection with dietary recommendations and exercise guidance, because that is how the medicines were studied.
What rules them out, or needs a conversation
- A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. Both medicines carry an FDA boxed warning because they caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodent studies; whether that happens in people is not known.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to conceive.
- A past serious allergic reaction to the medicine.
- Pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney problems or diabetic eye disease, each of which is weighed with you.
- Other medicines. Insulin and other drugs that lower blood sugar matter, and tirzepatide can make birth control pills less effective after starting and after each dose increase.
If the answer is no, or not yet
Weight that will not move is often more than one problem. If you are already near your ideal weight and one pinchable area ignores the gym, CoolSculpting is the treatment built for it. If the change came with hot flashes, a fading drive or flat energy, hormone replacement therapy for men and women begins with lab work to see whether hormones are involved. And if sore knees are what keep you from moving more, the same practice offers non-surgical knee pain treatment.
If the answer is yes
The injection goes under the skin once a week, starting at a low dose that rises in steps, and regular check-ins adjust the dose, the eating advice and the exercise guidance as you go. For the walking part of that guidance, Verona Park, which the Lenape Trail passes through, is close to home.
From Verona to your check-ins
Take Bloomfield Avenue to Route 23 north, then Mountainview Boulevard onto Route 202 through Lincoln Park to 624 Main Road in Towaco: around twelve miles, about 21 minutes without traffic.
Verona patients ask
What should I bring to the consultation? A list of every medicine and supplement you take, plus any recent blood work.
Will you prescribe one just because I ask? No. Which medicine, if either, is decided after your history has been reviewed.
Which days are you open? Monday through Saturday; Tuesdays run until 7 pm and Saturdays until 1 pm.
Compare the two in semaglutide vs. tirzepatide, or read the weight-loss injections page.
