For him, for her, or for both of you
Hormone replacement therapy at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is one program with two halves. Men whose blood work confirms low testosterone are treated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Women are treated with estrogen and progesterone therapy through perimenopause, menopause and the years beyond. If the question has come up for both partners in your household, both of you can be looked after in the same Towaco office, under the same physician. Kinnelon is already one of the towns our hormone patients travel from.
The road down from Kinnelon
Kinnelon and Montville Township are neighbors. From Fayson Lakes, at the southern end of the borough, take Boonton Avenue south, turn left onto Taylortown Road, then left again where it meets Main Road; our office is at number 624. That is about eight miles and 15 minutes without traffic. From Smoke Rise, give yourself closer to 25 minutes.
Before your first consultation
The first visit is a conversation and a full health history, taken in the room. A little preparation makes it more useful, so it helps to bring:
- a short note of what has changed and roughly when it began: sleep, energy, mood, weight, libido or focus
- the names and doses of your current medicines and supplements
- any recent blood work you already have
- your family history, especially hormone-sensitive cancers, blood clots or heart and blood-vessel conditions, since any of these can make hormone therapy unsafe
What happens after that first visit
Nothing is prescribed until your hormone levels have been measured. If treatment suits you, the plan is overseen by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, who owns the practice and is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and nurse practitioner Tanya Santoro, NP-C brings a particular focus on testosterone replacement. You can choose an injection, which allows small, precise changes in dose, or a cream or gel used daily. Repeat labs and follow-up visits then keep the dose moving with your numbers. The target is a normal range in which you function well, never the highest figure a lab can report.
As a rough guide, many patients notice their energy, mood and sleep picking up within two to four weeks, while libido, body composition and mental sharpness usually take two to three months to settle.
Kinnelon patients ask
Is hormone therapy only about menopause? No. Menopause care is one half of the program; testosterone therapy for men with lab-confirmed low levels is the other.
What might I feel in the first weeks? While the body adjusts, some people notice mild bloating, breast tenderness, a few breakouts, fluid retention or a reaction where an injection went in. These usually fade as the dose is fine-tuned.
Will I be on it for the rest of my life? Not necessarily. Some patients use it for one stage, such as menopause, and then taper off; others continue long term. Your plan is reviewed regularly and the choice stays yours.
Can I come outside working hours? On Tuesdays we see patients until 7 pm, and on Saturdays from 9 am until 1 pm.
