Why the questions come before the prescription
Semaglutide and tirzepatide are prescription medicines, and both carry an FDA boxed warning: in studies in rodents they caused thyroid C-cell tumors. Nobody knows whether the same happens in people, but it is the reason neither medicine is given to anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2). Neither is used during pregnancy. Your provider will also want to hear about any pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, kidney trouble or diabetic eye disease, and about every medicine you take, including the pill: tirzepatide can make oral contraceptives less effective after you start it and after each dose increase.
That screening is what a consultation at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is for. Our medical professionals review your health, your goals and your history first, and only then decide which medication, if either, belongs in your plan.
The two medicines in brief
- Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, a hormone the gut releases after eating that signals fullness and helps regulate blood sugar.
- Tirzepatide works on that same GLP-1 receptor and adds a second one, for the gut hormone GIP.
- Either one is a single injection under the skin once a week, begun at a low dose that is raised in stages.
- Every plan sets out the medication and dose alongside dietary recommendations, exercise guidance and regular check-ins.
Coming from Kinnelon
From the middle of the borough, follow Kinnelon Road out to Route 23, leave it at the exit signed for Pompton Plains and Lincoln Park, and take the Boulevard through Pompton Plains. A right turn onto Jacksonville Road then brings you all the way to Main Road in Towaco and our office at number 624. It is about eleven miles, or roughly 16 minutes without traffic, so a check-in fits around an ordinary day.
Thinking past the first few months
These medicines work for as long as you take them. Published follow-up studies found that many people put back a substantial part of what they had lost within a year of stopping semaglutide, which is why it is generally treated as a long-term medication. That is no argument against starting. It is an argument for using the months on treatment to build routines around food, movement and sleep that will outlast it, and for deciding any change of dose, or any decision to stop, together with your provider.
Kinnelon patients ask
Which symptoms should I report straight away? Severe stomach pain that will not go away, pain in the upper right of the abdomen with fever or yellowing of the skin or eyes, being unable to keep fluids down, or any swelling of the face, lips or throat. Most side effects are far milder, mainly nausea or a change in digestion while the dose is rising.
Does the injection replace diet and exercise? Yes. The published trials paired each medicine with a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, and your plan includes food and exercise guidance for exactly that reason.
What days can I book a check-in? Monday through Saturday. Tuesday is our late evening, until 7, and Friday finishes at 4.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
Shannon from the MedSpa is absolutely amazing! She took the time to really understand my skin and helped me figure out exactly what it needs. She recommended products that feel incredible on my skin and made the whole experience feel personalized. The room was so relaxing, and everything about the appointment was perfect. I’m someone who usually pushes off getting facials, but after finally getting one done, it was 100% worth it. Overall a 10/10 experience!
