Every expression line has a muscle under it
The creases that appear when you talk, squint or frown are called dynamic wrinkles, and each one sits over a particular muscle that folds the skin in the same place thousands of times a day. That is why a good neurotoxin treatment begins with anatomy rather than a list of areas. Botox and Dysport, both botulinum toxin type A, quiet the signal from nerve to muscle in the spot being treated, so the crease above it relaxes while the muscles around it carry on as usual.
Three familiar lines, three different muscles
- Horizontal forehead lines are made by the frontalis, the broad muscle that raises your eyebrows. It is dosed strategically, so the lines soften and your brows can still lift.
- The vertical “11s” between the brows are pulled in by two small muscles, the corrugator and the procerus, which draw the brows inward and down whenever you frown or concentrate.
- Crow’s feet come from the orbicularis oculi, the ring of muscle around each eye. Treating its outer edge softens the fan of lines and gives a more rested look.
- Smaller targets include bunny lines on the nose, a dimpled chin, fine lines around the lips and the vertical cords of the neck, called platysmal bands.
A physician whose specialty is muscle and movement
Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, who founded the practice and leads its injector team, is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the branch of medicine built around muscles, nerves and the way the body moves. Here, the injection points are customized to your facial structure and to the strength of each muscle, never traced from a stock diagram. Your treatment is given by Dr. D’Alessio herself or by one of her two nurse practitioners, Amy Natalicchio and Tanya Santoro.
The drive from Kinnelon
Kinnelon borders Montville Township, although no interstate exit sits inside the borough: the closest one to Kinnelon is on Route 23 in neighboring Riverdale. From there, I-287 south carries you to Exit 47, where Route 202 becomes Main Road and leads to our door at number 624 in Towaco. Starting from the middle of the borough, that is about 12 miles, or roughly 17 minutes without traffic.
Kinnelon patients ask
Will my eyebrows still move? Yes. Forehead dosing is set to smooth the horizontal lines while leaving the brows enough movement for natural expression.
When does the change show? Give it three to five days for the first softening and up to two weeks for the full effect.
Is any of it permanent? No. Over the following months your body breaks the product down and the muscle gradually works again, which is what makes neurotoxin so adjustable. Most people find results last around three to four months.
Can it help with more than wrinkles? For suitable candidates, yes: the same treatment is used for TMJ and jaw tension, chronic migraines and heavy underarm sweating, each after its own assessment.
What days are you open? Every day except Sunday. Tuesday appointments run until 7 in the evening, and on Saturday we close at 1.
