Making one trip count
From the middle of Essex Fells the drive to Towaco takes roughly 21 minutes without traffic, so plenty of people would rather not make it twice in a week. Montville MedSpa & Pain Center has massage, skin treatments, injectables and a pain practice in the same building, which makes pairing a massage with something else easy. A few points from the practice’s own aftercare decide how the pieces fit.
Pairing a massage with other treatments
- Botox or Dysport the same day. The practice advises against massaging a treated area for 24 hours after a neurotoxin. Tell your therapist where you were treated so she keeps her hands well clear of it.
- Dermal filler. Treated areas should be left untouched for three to six hours, and strenuous activity avoided for a day or two, so mention any filler before the session is planned.
- A HydraFacial. It has no downtime, so there is nothing to wait out on either side of your massage.
- A pain appointment. Therapeutic massage is one of the options listed on the practice’s back pain page, and patients already in pain management here can book a massage in the same office.
- Recovering from surgery elsewhere. Lymphatic drainage, a gentle 60-minute massage, may help with swelling and recovery after some procedures, once an individual assessment says it is appropriate.
The massage itself
There are three to choose from. Swedish, in 60 or 90 minutes, uses long, flowing strokes and gentle pressure for relaxation, better sleep and stress relief. Deep tissue, also 60 or 90 minutes, works slowly into the deeper muscle and connective tissue where chronic tension sits, and can leave you a little sore the next day. Lymphatic drainage is the gentlest of the three. Any of them can be extended, at an additional cost, with hot stones, reflexology, Reiki, CBD oil, a craniosacral scalp massage or 30 minutes of trigger point therapy for one stubborn knot.
Your therapist
Sessions are with Maryann Constantino, LMT, the practice’s licensed massage therapist. Her approach is holistic as well as therapeutic: she asks how your body feels that day, then keeps adjusting pressure and technique as the hour goes on.
Before you arrive
Wear something comfortable, drink some water during the day and skip a large meal just before. Come a few minutes early so the paperwork does not eat into your time on the table. Tell Maryann about recent injuries, surgery or medical conditions, and in particular about a blood thinner, a past blood clot, pregnancy or osteoporosis, because firm pressure is not right for everyone.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
Kristen is truly exceptional — she goes above and beyond in every way. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever find anyone who matches her level of excellence. I’ve had several Vivace microneedling treatments with her, and she was incredibly thorough and meticulous every time. Her follow-up care is just as impressive. I’m a very cautious person when it comes to these treatments and I ask a lot of questions, and she always responds with patience, professionalism, and genuine care. It’s clear she takes pride in her work. I highly, highly recommend her!
