The lines that come from laughing

Crow’s feet are the fan of fine creases at the outer corner of each eye. They are drawn by the orbicularis oculi, the ring of muscle that closes the eye, which tightens whenever you squint into low sun or laugh properly. Where each injection goes depends on the shape of your face, how strongly that muscle pulls and which lines bother you. Many people treat the eyes together with the forehead lines and the “11s” between the brows, since all three belong to the upper face, but a plan can stop at the eyes alone.

What it will not change

• Hollows under the eye. Shadows from lost volume beneath the eye are not made by a muscle, so a neurotoxin leaves them be. Tear-trough dermal filler is the tool for that kind of hollowness.
• Crepey or sun-marked skin. Texture, fine surface lines and pigment live in the skin itself, where Sciton’s MOXI and BroadBand Light do the work.
• Lines present when you are not smiling. A crease that stays when your face is completely relaxed usually points to volume, not movement, and your injector will say so at the consultation.

Your appointment, and the fortnight after

• The week before: steer clear of alcohol and blood-thinning medicines where it is safe to; a prescribed blood thinner should only be paused on its prescriber’s advice.
• In the chair: ten to twenty minutes of small injections through a fine-gauge needle, each one a quick pinch.
• That day: no downtime, but do not massage the area for 24 hours; ice helps with any puffiness.
• Days three to five: the first softening around the eyes.
• Days ten to fourteen: the full effect, which then holds for roughly three to four months.

Rarely, product that drifts can cause a slight droop of the brow or eyelid, a risk physician-level anatomical precision keeps low.
