The gentlest massage on the menu
Most people picture massage as firm pressure on a tight muscle. Lymphatic drainage is something else: a 60-minute session of gentle, rhythmic movements that encourage lymph, the fluid your lymphatic system carries, to keep moving. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center it is one of three core massages, alongside Swedish and deep tissue, and it is the one designed with swelling and recovery in mind.
What it may help with
The practice describes lymphatic drainage as a massage that may help:
- reduce certain kinds of swelling or fluid retention
- support recovery after some surgical procedures
- support the immune system and the body’s own clearing processes
It is not a fix for every kind of swelling, and it is not right for everyone. That is why an individual assessment comes first, to decide whether it suits you and your situation.
If you are recovering from surgery
A little preparation helps the session be planned safely:
- Say what was done, and when. Your therapist needs to know about recent surgery, injuries and medical conditions before the session is planned.
- Mention your medicines and history. A blood thinner, an earlier blood clot, a pregnancy or osteoporosis each changes how massage should be approached.
- Bring your surgical team’s instructions, if they gave you any about massage or pressure on the area.
How it differs from the other two
Swedish massage uses long, flowing strokes for relaxation, and deep tissue works slowly into deeper muscle and connective tissue for stubborn tightness; both come in 60 or 90 minutes, and deep tissue can leave you a little sore the next day. Lymphatic drainage is lighter than either and is offered as a 60-minute session. Once you have healed, the other two are there for you as well, and add-ons such as reflexology, Reiki or a scalp massage are available at an additional cost.
Your therapist
Sessions are with Maryann Constantino, LMT, a licensed massage therapist whose approach is holistic as well as therapeutic, and lymphatic drainage is part of the menu she works from. Because the practice is also a pain center led by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, patients in pain management can add massage to their care in the same building.
From Roseland
Our door is about 11 miles from the middle of Roseland, roughly 20 minutes without traffic. I-280 west and then Changebridge Road do most of the work, and a right turn onto Main Road leaves the last mile to number 624, so the drive home after a session stays short.
Roseland clients ask
Does lymphatic drainage hurt? It is designed to be gentle and rhythmic, so it should feel light rather than deep.
Can I come at the weekend? Yes, on Saturday mornings, until 1 pm.
What will it cost? That depends on the massage, its length and any add-ons, and the office can give you current prices and package options.
What if I just want to relax? Then a Swedish massage is the place to start; our guide Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book? helps you choose.
Every massage and add-on is described on the massage therapy page, and the rest of the practice on our Roseland page.
