For a town that keeps moving
Wayne skates, swings and runs. The Ice Vault rink is home to figure skaters and to hockey teams, William Paterson University’s among them, and the course at Preakness Hills Country Club was completed in 1929. Whatever your sport, the muscles doing the work need looking after between games, and massage at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is planned around what yours have been through that week.
Matching the session to the sport
- Hard training and lingering tightness. Deep tissue massage, 60 or 90 minutes, works slowly into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, which suits repetitive physical demands and recovery after certain activities. Expect to feel it the next day, the way you feel a tough workout.
- One knot that will not let go. Trigger point therapy is a 30-minute add-on aimed at specific knots in a muscle group, and the practice describes it as ideal for athletes and anyone with repetitive strain.
- Stiff, cold muscles after the rink. Heated stones, another add-on, warm tight muscles so they release more readily and help circulation along.
- The day before a big game or race. A Swedish massage of 60 or 90 minutes loosens you up without leaving you sore.
- Swelling after an operation. If an injury has ended in surgery, lymphatic drainage, a gentle 60-minute session, may help with swelling and recovery once an individual assessment has said it is appropriate.
Add-ons carry an additional cost. Sessions are with licensed massage therapist Maryann Constantino, LMT.
When an injury needs a doctor
Massage may ease muscle tension for some people, but it is not a diagnosis. A knee, shoulder or back that keeps flaring up can be seen in the same practice by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the specialty of muscles, nerves and movement. Her non-surgical care covers knee, shoulder and back pain, along with trigger point injections.
How long the drive takes
Wayne is a big township, so the answer depends on your corner of it. Without traffic:
- Mountain View: under five miles and about nine minutes, straight along Route 202.
- Pines Lake: about ten miles and roughly 19 minutes, by Riverdale Road, the Newark-Pompton Turnpike and Jacksonville Road.
- William Paterson University: about eleven and a half miles and roughly 23 minutes, by Ratzer Road and Jacksonville Road.
Wayne clients ask
Should a hard session hurt? It should feel strong, never sharp. Say so whenever you want less pressure.
Can I come after practice on a weekday? On Tuesdays, when we see clients until 7 pm.
Is 90 minutes worth it after a tournament weekend? If several areas need deep work, the longer session gives your therapist room to reach them all without hurrying.
Read the massage therapy page, or Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book?
