A face has three layers to think about
When a face looks more tired or older than you feel, the reason usually sits in one of three places. First come the muscles, which crease the skin each time you frown, squint or lift your brows. Beneath the skin lies volume, the fat and collagen that thin out over the years. And then there is the surface itself, its tone and its texture. Botox and Dysport treat only the first of those layers, which is exactly why they work so well on some lines and leave others untouched.
What the neurotoxin layer covers
- Forehead lines left by raising your brows, softened with dosing that still lets the brows lift.
- The vertical “11s” between the brows, pulled in by two small muscles whenever you frown or concentrate.
- Crow’s feet fanning out from the outer corners of the eyes.
- Smaller spots such as bunny lines along the nose, a dimpled chin, fine lines around the lips and bands in the neck.
Both products block acetylcholine, the chemical messenger a nerve uses to make a muscle tighten. The treated muscle rests, the crease above it eases, and over the following months the effect fades as your body breaks the product down, which keeps the whole thing adjustable.
The other two layers, and the order of things
Lost volume is replaced with hyaluronic acid dermal fillers or rebuilt gradually with a collagen stimulator such as Sculptra. The surface layer belongs to treatments like Sciton’s BroadBand Light (BBL) and MOXI, or the PRP “vampire” facial, which uses platelet-rich plasma drawn from your own blood. The injectors and the medical estheticians work in the same office, so these can be laid out as one sequence in which each step builds on the one before, rather than as separate, unrelated visits.
Nurse practitioner Tanya Santoro is one of the injectors who will talk you through that order. She and Amy Natalicchio work to the standard set by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, the practice’s founder, whose board certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation centres on muscles and nerves.
Getting here from North Caldwell
From the middle of the borough, head west on Greenbrook Road to Passaic Avenue and follow it north as it becomes Two Bridges Road. Pine Brook Road and then Chapel Hill Road bring you out on Route 202 in Lincoln Park, and 202 carries you west into Towaco, where our office stands at 624 Main Road. It comes to about eight miles, roughly 16 minutes without traffic.
North Caldwell patients ask
Do I need all three layers treated? No. Plenty of people need only one. The consultation looks at how your face moves, where it has lost volume and how your skin looks, and the plan includes only what will help.
How soon do lines soften? Usually within three to five days, with the complete result in place by about two weeks.
Is there any downtime? None to speak of. Simply leave the treated area alone, without rubbing or massaging it, for 24 hours.
How long does a treatment last? About three to four months for most people, and with treatment kept up, the muscles can become conditioned to stay more relaxed between visits.
