An injection is one part of four
At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center a weight-loss injection is never handed over on its own. After a consultation in which our medical professionals review your health, your goals and your medical history, every plan is written in four parts: the medication and its dose, dietary recommendations, exercise guidance and regular check-ins. Here is what each part is there to do.
The medication
- Semaglutide behaves like GLP-1, the hormone your gut releases after eating, which signals fullness, slows how quickly the stomach empties and helps regulate blood sugar.
- Tirzepatide works on that same GLP-1 receptor and also on GIP, a second gut hormone involved in insulin release and energy balance.
- Both are injected under the skin once a week, typically into the stomach, thigh or upper arm, beginning at a low dose that is raised in stages.
The food
With a smaller appetite, what you do eat counts for more. Building meals around protein, such as eggs, Greek yogurt, fish, chicken, beans or tofu, helps protect muscle while the weight comes off. Vegetables, fruit and whole grains add fiber, which also helps with constipation, and water through the day matters because people on these medicines often end up drinking less without noticing.
The movement
Part of any weight that is lost is lean tissue rather than fat. Regular activity, with some strength or resistance work built into the week, helps you hold on to muscle while the scale moves, and that is why exercise guidance sits in the plan right next to the prescription. The published trials behind both medicines paired them with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, too.
The check-ins
Check-ins are where the plan gets tuned to you. Your provider asks how your appetite has changed and how you are tolerating the medication, looks at your progress, and decides whether the dose or the advice should change. They are also the place to raise side effects, which are mostly digestive, mostly mild to moderate, and usually at their worst in the days after a dose goes up.
From North Caldwell
The office is about eight miles from the middle of North Caldwell, around 16 minutes without traffic, by Passaic Avenue and Two Bridges Road to Route 202 in Lincoln Park, then west on 202 to 624 Main Road in Towaco.
North Caldwell patients ask
Which of the two medicines will I be given? That is decided at the consultation, weighing your goals, your medical history, any other medicines you take, including birth control pills, which tirzepatide can make less effective, and how you got on with either drug before.
Can this sit alongside hormone therapy? Yes. Some patients ask about hormone replacement therapy for men and women as part of a broader plan, and both are offered within the same practice.
What if the side effects do not settle? Tell your provider. The pace of your dose increases can be revisited, which is far better than stopping on your own.
Are you open late? On Tuesdays, until 7 pm.
Compare the two in semaglutide vs. tirzepatide, read the weight-loss injections page, or see our North Caldwell page.
