Two medicines, and one decision to make well
At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center the choice of weekly injection is between semaglutide and tirzepatide. It is easy to walk in having already picked one after reading about it online, but the decision is better made at a consultation, where our medical professionals review your health, your goals and your medical history first. Here is the difference between the two, and what actually tips the choice.
- Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It imitates GLP-1, a hormone released by the gut after eating, which signals fullness, slows how fast the stomach empties and helps regulate blood sugar. It is the ingredient in Ozempic® and Wegovy®.
- Tirzepatide is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, acting on a second gut hormone, GIP, as well. It is the ingredient in Mounjaro® and Zepbound®.
Five things your provider weighs
- What you are aiming for. How much you hope to lose, and over what stretch of time.
- Your medical history. Type 2 diabetes, any past pancreatitis or gallbladder disease, and how well your kidneys work all count.
- The rest of your medicine cabinet. Insulin and other drugs that lower blood sugar matter, and so does the pill: tirzepatide can make oral contraceptives less effective after you start and after each dose increase, so a non-oral or backup method is advised during those weeks.
- Any earlier experience. If you have taken either one before, how well you tolerated it and how you responded.
- How it goes once you start. If side effects are hard to manage, adjusting the dose or switching to the other medicine can be discussed, always under your provider’s guidance.
Two things rule out both medicines whatever else is true: a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2, and pregnancy. Both carry an FDA boxed warning because they caused thyroid C-cell tumors in rodent studies; whether that happens in people is not known.
What the two have in common
Each is injected under the skin once a week on the same day, typically in the stomach, thigh or upper arm. Each begins at a low dose that is raised at intervals, and their side effects overlap heavily, mainly nausea, diarrhea, constipation and vomiting while the dose is climbing. Either way, the plan pairs the prescription with dietary recommendations, exercise guidance and regular check-ins. For the walking part of that guidance, Patriots’ Path follows the Whippany River through the township and makes an easy place to begin.
Check-ins from Whippany
Route 10 west leads to Parsippany Road, which runs north through Parsippany to the I-287 northbound ramp. At Exit 47 turn left for Main Road, and number 624 in Towaco is about a mile and a half on. The whole trip is about ten miles, close to 15 minutes without traffic.
Hanover patients ask
Can I switch later if the first choice does not suit me? Sometimes. Your provider decides the new starting dose and when to begin it, so never carry on from an old dose on your own.
Does the medicine replace changes to eating and exercise? No. The published trials paired both medicines with a reduced-calorie diet and more activity, which is why your plan includes both.
Is there a weekend appointment? Saturday mornings, nine until one.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
We drive over 50+ miles to come see Kristen, particularly. I can’t say enough good things about her, the results, and the experience she makes when we come into this spa. Thank you for always going the extra mile for my two daughters and making us feel like we are at home away from home after having such a long drive. Definitely worth the money and the trip! The staff is also always very friendly, allowing me to switch appointments when I need to, and they are always so kind when I call. I am a picky customer, it is hard to make me happy. Definitely recommend this MedSpa!
