When the mirror does not match the plan
Not everyone who asks Montville MedSpa & Pain Center about filler is starting from scratch. Some arrive with lips that look heavier than they wanted, a lump they can feel, one side fuller than the other, or gel that seems to have wandered past the border of the lip. The practice’s own blog traces most of these to technique or product choice: gel placed at the wrong depth or not properly molded, or a filler too firm for the area. The useful news is that hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved.
First, give it time
Filler that was placed recently may simply not have finished settling. Swelling hides the true result for days to two weeks, longer under the eyes, and some unevenness while the gel beds in is normal and can be corrected at a follow-up. The practice’s guidance on lip filler is that dissolving becomes the better choice when a problem is still there after four weeks, or when you simply do not like the look.
What dissolving involves
Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks hyaluronic acid gel down. It is injected where the filler sits and begins working almost at once, although the full effect can take up to two weeks, and a heavily overfilled or migrated area sometimes needs more than one round. Expect swelling and possibly bruising, and do not be alarmed if lips look thin or a little wrinkled for a while as the volume goes; that phase is temporary. Most lips return to their original size and shape once the gel has gone, though years of repeated filler can leave tissue slower to bounce back. Before anything new is placed, the area is left to recover completely, which can take a month or more.
What to bring
- The product name and the date, if you have them. Hyaluronidase only works on hyaluronic acid filler, so this matters.
- Photographs from before the treatment, which show what your own lips or cheeks looked like.
- A short note of what has bothered you since, and roughly when it started.
Starting again, more slowly
When filler is placed again, the plan is drawn for your anatomy, with injection points mapped beforehand, the gel molded by hand and checked while you smile and talk. Only clinically proven, FDA-approved fillers are used here, none of them known for stiffness or migration, and the practice does not overfill. You see the same provider for your consultation, treatment and follow-up.
Treatment is supervised by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, trained in facial anatomy and vascular safety, with nurse practitioners Amy Natalicchio and Tanya Santoro.
