The ache that sitting builds
Denville is often called the hub of Morris County: Route 10, Route 46 and I-80 all pass through it, and its station serves two NJ Transit lines. A hub is a place people sit in, whether on a train, behind the wheel or at a desk at the end of the commute. Hours in a seat tend to show up low down: a back that aches by evening, hips that feel locked when you stand, stiffness when you bend, twist or lift. The practice’s own back pain guidance lists soreness after prolonged sitting among the signs, and it lists therapeutic massage among the ways it is treated.
A session aimed at the lower back
Maryann Constantino, LMT, the licensed massage therapist at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center, asks where it hurts and what sets it off before she begins, then adjusts as she works.
- Deep tissue, 60 or 90 minutes. Slow, deliberate work into the deeper muscle and the connective tissue around it, the layer where settled-in tightness lives. If your upper back and neck need attention as well, the longer session avoids rushing.
- Trigger point therapy, a 30-minute add-on. Concentrated pressure on the knots in one muscle group, useful when a single spot keeps nagging.
- Hot stones, an add-on. Heated stones warm stiff muscles first so they release more readily.
- Swedish, 60 or 90 minutes, when stress rather than one sore spot is the main problem.
Add-ons are an additional cost. Deep work should feel strong but never sharp; ask for lighter pressure whenever you want it, because a muscle braced against pain will not let go. A little soreness the next day, like after a hard workout, is normal.
Tell her first
Mention any recent injury or surgery and any medical condition. If you take a blood thinner, have had a blood clot, are pregnant or have osteoporosis, say so before the session, since firm pressure is not right for everyone.
When the back needs the doctor
Most back pain comes from muscle strain, inflammation or mechanical stress rather than anything serious, but some deserves a closer look. Pain that spreads into the hips, buttocks or legs can point to sciatica. Pain that persists, gets worse or starts limiting what you can do is a reason for a consultation, and pain lasting twelve weeks or more is considered chronic. Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, leads the practice’s non-surgical back pain treatment, including trigger point injections, PRP and targeted exercise, and massage can sit inside that plan.
Denville clients ask
How long is the drive? About 16 minutes without traffic by OpenStreetMap’s routing: Route 46 east to Parsippany, I-287 north to Exit 47, then left along Main Road to number 624.
Should I book 60 or 90 minutes? Ninety minutes suits deep tissue that has to cover the whole back as well as the neck and shoulders. If the trouble sits in one area, say so when you book.
Can I come after work? On Tuesdays, until 7 pm, and on Saturday mornings from 9 to 1.
Help choosing is in Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book?, the full menu is on the massage therapy page, and more about the area is on our Denville page.

Shannon from the MedSpa is absolutely amazing! She took the time to really understand my skin and helped me figure out exactly what it needs. She recommended products that feel incredible on my skin and made the whole experience feel personalized. The room was so relaxing, and everything about the appointment was perfect. I’m someone who usually pushes off getting facials, but after finally getting one done, it was 100% worth it. Overall a 10/10 experience!
