Five areas, five sets of answers

“How long does filler last?” and “how swollen will I be?” have no single answer, because they depend on where the gel goes. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center the fillers are mainly FDA-approved hyaluronic acid (HA) gels, each made with its own firmness for a particular job. This is how the main areas compare.

Area by area

Lips. Juvéderm Volbella XC is the softest option, for a subtle change and blurred lip lines; Juvéderm Ultra XC gives bolder shape and volume, and Revanesse Versa plumps lips and fine lines alike. Lips move all day and break filler down fastest, so they need upkeep most often. They also swell more readily than other areas, so judge them only after the swelling has passed.

Cheeks. The midface is one of the first places to lose volume. Juvéderm Voluma XC restores projection across the cheekbone, and the lift it gives can soften the folds lower down. Cheeks move little, and Voluma there can last up to 18 to 24 months.

Under the eyes. Tear-trough filler, placed with a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula, eases the hollows that read as dark circles. It suits hollowness rather than puffy bags of excess tissue, the finished look develops over one to four weeks, and a touch-up is usually advised every six to twelve months.

Chin and jawline. Juvéderm Volux XC is a structural gel that can bring a receding chin forward, lengthen a short one, widen a narrow one or sharpen a softened jaw. Like the cheeks, this area holds filler comparatively well.

The folds by the mouth. Nasolabial folds and marionette lines are often treated with Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC or Vollure XC, while RHA, a resilient HA gel, suits the parts of the face that are never still.

What stays the same everywhere

A numbing cream goes on 15 to 30 minutes beforehand, and most modern fillers contain lidocaine too. Treatment takes about 20 to 45 minutes depending on how many areas are done. The gel is molded by hand and checked while you smile and frown. Swelling, redness or bruising usually clears within one to three days. For three to six hours afterwards leave the treated skin alone, give hard workouts a pause of a day or two, and keep alcohol, strong sunshine and, where your doctor agrees, blood-thinning medicine out of the first 24 hours. A follow-up one to two weeks later is the time for small adjustments, and every HA gel can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
