The half of the body that does the walking
Talk about massage usually settles on necks and shoulders. Yet plenty of tightness sits lower down: calves tight after a long day standing, thighs and hips stiff from climbing, feet that ache by evening. Rockaway Township gives the legs plenty to do, since the country in and around it takes in the trails of Farny State Park, the Wildcat Ridge Wildlife Management Area and Mount Hope Historical Park. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center a session can be weighted toward the legs and feet, and Maryann Constantino, LMT, our licensed massage therapist, plans it around what you describe that day.
Building a session for legs and feet
- Deep tissue, 60 or 90 minutes, for tightness settled into the deeper layers of the calves, thighs and hips. When the back needs work too, the longer booking keeps either half from being rushed.
- Reflexology, added on, which applies pressure to points on the feet that the practice describes as corresponding to organs and systems of the body, chosen for balance and stress relief.
- Hot stones, added on, warming stiff muscle so it gives way more readily and helping circulation.
- Trigger point therapy, a 30-minute add-on, for one knot, say high in a calf, that will not ease.
- Swedish, 60 or 90 minutes, when the legs are simply tired and you would rather leave loose than sore.
- Lymphatic drainage, 60 minutes, a gentle massage that may help with certain kinds of swelling, offered once an individual assessment says it suits you.
Add-ons are an additional cost, and more than one can be combined. After deep tissue, a day of soreness is normal.
When aching legs are not about muscle
Not every heavy, tired leg is a tight one. The practice’s vein pages describe aching, heaviness, throbbing, swelling and restlessness as possible signs of venous insufficiency, in which damaged veins lead to poor blood flow, and those are a reason for an examination rather than another massage. Vein patients start with a consultation and diagnostic evaluation with Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, working with Ana Marie Heredia-Levi, RVS, RVT, the practice’s vascular technician; see vein treatments. A knee that hurts on the trail has its own page too: knee pain treatment.
Tell Maryann first
Mention any recent injury or operation and any medical condition. A blood thinner, a past blood clot, a pregnancy or osteoporosis each changes how firm the pressure should be, so say so before the session is planned.
Out of the township
From near Hibernia, Green Pond Road takes you south to I-80; follow it east, change to I-287 northbound, and leave at Exit 47, where a left turn along Main Road reaches number 624. About 15 miles in all, roughly 20 minutes without traffic, so the drive home stays short.
Rockaway Township clients ask
Should deep work on the calves hurt? It should feel strong rather than sharp; ask for lighter pressure at any point.
Is massage only for patients of the pain practice? No. Anyone can book, and patients already in pain management here can add massage in the same office.
Is there an evening slot? Tuesday sessions run until 7 pm.
Not sure which base massage to pick? Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book? walks through it, and the massage therapy page lists every add-on.
