For men, for women, and for the way you live
Hormone replacement therapy at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is offered to both sexes. A man is treated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) once his blood work confirms a low level; a woman is treated with estrogen and progesterone through perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause. After the consultation and labs have shown that therapy suits you, a practical question follows: how will you actually take it? This page is about that choice, and about how a dose is kept right once you have started.
Injection, cream or gel
- An injection gives customizable dosing that can be changed in small, precise steps. A reaction where the needle went in is possible early on.
- A topical cream or gel goes on the skin each day, a flexible option for people who prefer a daily routine.
- The cost differs between them. The method, the dose and how often you are treated all affect the figure, and your provider sets out the whole cost of your own plan at the consultation, along with payment options. Insurance varies widely: some plans pay for lab tests and certain prescription hormones, while compounded preparations often are not covered.
Neither is chosen for you in advance. Your provider talks through your schedule and your preferences, and either route is overseen the same way.
Keeping the dose right
A first prescription is a starting point. Follow-up labs and in-person reviews check your levels against your symptoms, and the dose is moved on that evidence. The goal is a normal, functional range in which your body works well, never the top figure a lab can report. Over time some patients carry on for years, and others use therapy for one stage of life, such as menopause, and later taper off; that decision is reviewed with you and stays yours.
The first few weeks
While the body adjusts, some people notice mild bloating, tender breasts or mood swings as a woman’s estrogen settles, a few breakouts, some fluid retention, or soreness at an injection site. These usually ease as the dose is fine-tuned. HRT does not directly cause weight gain; any early puffiness tends to be water and is short-lived.
Who should not start
A personal or family history of hormone-sensitive cancer, blood clots or certain cardiovascular conditions may make therapy unsafe, which is why your history is taken in the room before anything is prescribed. Every plan is overseen by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and nurse practitioner Tanya Santoro, NP-C, who holds a master’s in adult health nursing from Fairleigh Dickinson University, specializes in testosterone therapy.
The trip for each review
Starting near Hibernia, follow Green Pond Road south to Interstate 80, go east, then switch to I-287 north and leave at Exit 47 for Main Road in Towaco. About 15 miles, roughly 20 minutes without traffic, and every review is in person.
Rockaway Township patients ask
Can I switch from cream to injections later? Your provider can revisit the method at a review if your routine or your levels call for it.
Could my husband or wife be treated too? Yes. Men and women are both treated, and each person gets a separate history, separate labs and a separate plan.
Can I check my symptoms before booking? Take the 30-second hormone quiz.
More detail sits on the full HRT page, and the in-office hormone program page explains how the visits run.
Testimonials
What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
My 17 year old daughter sees Dr. D’Alessio for hyperhidrosis (excessive underarm sweat) which for a teenager is emotionally embarrassing. I knew my daughter needed a provider who was able to be sympathetic to her needs and have a caring touch. Dr. D took the time to speak with my daughter and provide a treatment plan just for her. For her initial Botox treatment my daughter was very nervous. Dr. D was, as always, very patient with her and made her experience pain free! We wouldn't consider going anywhere else!
