A body that follows the calendar
Life in a lake borough changes with the months. Summer is spent on and around the water, autumn brings leaves and gutters, winter means clearing the driveway, and spring sends everyone back into the garden. Each season tends to leave its own kind of tightness, and a massage at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is planned around the one you walk in with, by Maryann Constantino, LMT, our licensed massage therapist.
Season by season
- After a summer of paddling and swimming. Shoulders and the upper back carry most of that work. Deep tissue massage, 60 or 90 minutes, moves slowly into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, and a 30-minute trigger point add-on can concentrate on one knot that will not let go.
- After raking and ladders in the autumn. When the lower back stiffens and limits how you move, deep tissue is again the usual choice, with heated stones added to warm the muscles first so they release more readily.
- Through the snow and the dark evenings. A shoveling morning can leave the back sore, and short days can leave you wound up and sleeping badly. A Swedish massage, 60 or 90 minutes of long strokes and gentle pressure, is built for winding down, and a craniosacral scalp massage adds attention to the head, neck and spine.
- Back in the garden in spring. Hours spent kneeling and lifting suit a full-body session, and reflexology adds pressure-point work on the feet.
- Any time after surgery. Lymphatic drainage is a gentle, rhythmic 60-minute session that may help with certain kinds of swelling and with recovery, once an individual assessment says it suits you.
Every add-on is an additional cost, and more than one can share a session.
When the back pain travels
Massage may ease muscle tension and discomfort for some people, but a low back is not always a muscle problem. Pain that runs from the buttock down the back of one leg, especially with numbness or tingling, can be sciatica, where a nerve is being irritated. Because the practice is also a pain center, Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, can look for the cause in the same building. Pain that is severe, lasts longer than a few weeks, keeps coming back or spoils your sleep is a reason to book with her; read more about sciatica and back pain treatment.
The drive home
From Bloomingdale, Main Street and the Paterson-Hamburg Turnpike lead to I-287 south. Exit 47 drops you onto Main Road, and our office at 624 is about a mile and a half along: close to 14 minutes without traffic, so you are home again soon after the session ends.
Bloomingdale clients ask
Will I feel sore afterwards? After deep tissue, a little soreness for a day or so is normal, much like the day after a hard workout. Swedish tends to leave people loose rather than sore.
What should I mention before we begin? Recent injuries or surgery, a blood thinner, an earlier blood clot, a pregnancy or osteoporosis, since each changes how firm the pressure should be.
How should I get ready? Wear something comfortable, drink some water, avoid a heavy meal just beforehand and arrive a few minutes early for the paperwork.
Can I come on a Saturday? Yes, from 9 am to 1 pm, and on Tuesdays we see clients until 7 pm.
Help choosing is in Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book?, and the whole menu is on our massage therapy page.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
We drive over 50+ miles to come see Kristen, particularly. I can’t say enough good things about her, the results, and the experience she makes when we come into this spa. Thank you for always going the extra mile for my two daughters and making us feel like we are at home away from home after having such a long drive. Definitely worth the money and the trip! The staff is also always very friendly, allowing me to switch appointments when I need to, and they are always so kind when I call. I am a picky customer, it is hard to make me happy. Definitely recommend this MedSpa!
