One movement, thousands of times
Some aches start with a single awkward lift. Others build slowly from doing one thing over and over: a hand on a mouse for eight hours, arms raised to cut and blow-dry hair, a grip on the same tool, a toddler always carried on the same hip. The muscles doing the work tighten and shorten, and the ones that should balance them are left out. Massage at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center can be aimed squarely at that pattern.
Building a session around your job
- Deep tissue massage, 60 or 90 minutes. Slower, firmer work into the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The practice suggests it where tension keeps coming back, where stiffness is limiting how you move, and for people whose days make repetitive physical demands.
- Trigger point therapy, a 30-minute add-on. Sustained pressure on the tight knots inside particular muscle groups, which the practice describes as well suited to repetitive stress.
- Hot stones. Heated stones warm and relax tight muscle, so the tension lets go more readily.
- Scalp massage. Work on the head, neck and spine for people whose tension climbs into the back of the head.
Tell your therapist what your day looks like
Maryann Constantino, LMT, the practice’s licensed massage therapist, plans each session around what your body needs that day and changes pressure and technique as she goes. It helps her to know which hand you work with, how many hours you spend in the same position, and anything medical: recent injuries, surgeries or conditions. Wear comfortable clothes, drink water beforehand, skip a big meal right before and arrive a few minutes early for the paperwork.
When it may be more than a tight muscle
Massage can ease muscular tension, and the right approach depends on what is behind the pain. Tendonitis, the irritation of a tendon, usually comes from overuse and repetitive strain, and tennis elbow is often linked to repeated wrist and arm movements rather than tennis. Pain that will not settle, weakness, or numbness running into the hand deserve a medical assessment. Here that is in the same building: Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, treats tendonitis, neck pain and shoulder pain without surgery, and offers trigger point injections as well.
Driving over from Haledon
Belmont Avenue brings you to West Broadway; Union Avenue continues through Totowa, where it is called Union Boulevard, as far as Route 46. Route 23 north, Mountainview Boulevard and Route 202 cross Lincoln Park to 624 Main Road in Towaco, about 20 minutes in all without traffic.
Haledon clients ask
Can I add massage if I already see Dr. D’Alessio for pain? Yes. Patients in the pain program can book massage in the same office.
How firm will deep tissue be? As firm as is useful and no firmer. Say so whenever the pressure is too much, and it will be adjusted.
When are there appointments outside office hours? Tuesdays run until 7 pm, and Saturday mornings are open from 9 until 1.
