A neurotoxin appointment at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center begins with a conversation rather than a needle. Your injector needs certain things from you, you are owed certain answers in return, and the injections themselves, usually 10 to 20 minutes with a fine-gauge needle, go better once both sides have been covered.

What to tell your injector

• The lines you want softened. Point to them while you frown, squint or lift your brows. Placement is built around those lines, the structure of your face and how strongly each muscle pulls.
• Your medicines, and your week. Blood thinners and alcohol are best avoided for up to a week before treatment. A prescribed blood thinner should only be paused on the advice of the doctor who prescribed it.
• Any earlier treatment. If you have had Botox or Dysport somewhere else, bring the date and the product name; at least three months between touch-ups is the usual guidance.
• Dates that matter. The complete effect takes 10 to 14 days to arrive, which changes when you should book ahead of a wedding or a photograph.
• Anything medical. Jaw clenching, frequent headaches and heavy underarm sweating each have an assessment of their own: see TMJ treatment, Botox for chronic migraines and Botox for hyperhidrosis.

What you should hear back

• Which product, and the reason. Botox and Dysport both belong to the botulinum toxin type A family and work by the same mechanism, but their formulations differ and so does the way they spread, which can make one a better fit for a particular area.
• Where each injection will go. A plan drawn for your own face, never a template, with your expressions kept intact.
• Whether a neurotoxin is the right tool. A crease still visible while your face is at rest usually reflects lost volume, and dermal fillers are the better answer for that.
• The next fortnight. Softening from about day three to five, the full result by day 10 to 14, and a follow-up visit once it has settled so small refinements can be made.
• The risks, in plain terms. Mostly redness, swelling or a small bruise that fades within hours to a few days, sometimes a headache or a heavy feeling for a day or two, and rarely a slight eyelid or brow droop if product migrates.

How long will the result last? Typically three to four months. With regular treatment, many patients find their results stretch further between visits.

Can I go straight back to work? Yes. There is no downtime; just leave the treated area unrubbed for 24 hours.
