One hormone, two jobs
GLP-1 is a hormone the gut releases after a meal, and it does two things at once. It tells the brain you have eaten enough, and it helps the pancreas release insulin as blood sugar rises. Semaglutide copies GLP-1; tirzepatide does the same and also acts on the receptor for GIP, a second gut hormone involved in insulin release and energy balance. That is why the same ingredients turn up in diabetes medicines and in weight-management medicines, and why blood sugar is part of every weight-loss conversation at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center.
The brand names, sorted by purpose
- For type 2 diabetes: Ozempic® (semaglutide) and Mounjaro® (tirzepatide).
- For chronic weight management: Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Zepbound® (tirzepatide).
The two versions of each ingredient carry different approved uses and doses.
How steadier sugar helps with hunger
When insulin responds properly to a meal, the spikes and dips in blood sugar that can set off cravings are smoothed out. Add a stomach that empties more slowly and quieter hunger signals from the brain, and eating less becomes far easier to keep up. It does not replace the routine around it, though: the published trials paired both medicines with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, and your plan includes dietary recommendations and exercise guidance for that reason.
If you already have diabetes or use insulin
- Bring every medicine on one list, including insulin and any other drug that lowers blood sugar, since your provider weighs them when choosing between semaglutide, tirzepatide or neither.
- Learn the signs of a low. On these injections alongside insulin, shakiness, sweating, confusion or a racing heartbeat can mean your sugar has dropped too far.
- Report changes in your eyesight, particularly if you have type 2 diabetes; diabetic eye disease is among the things your provider asks about.
- Mention kidney trouble, pancreatitis or gallbladder disease, which are reviewed before a prescription as well.
Who these medicines suit
Generally adults whose BMI indicates overweight or obesity, who have struggled to lose weight with diet and exercise, and who are ready to commit to a healthier routine. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2 rules out both, as does pregnancy. After the consultation, the weekly injection starts low and rises in stages, with regular check-ins to adjust the dose and the advice.
The drive from Haledon
Belmont Avenue, West Broadway and Union Avenue take you to Route 46; Route 23 north, Mountainview Boulevard and Route 202 finish the trip through Lincoln Park to 624 Main Road in Towaco. Plan on about 20 minutes without traffic.
Haledon patients ask
Are the side effects different if I have diabetes? The commonest ones are digestive for everybody: nausea, diarrhea, constipation or vomiting, usually strongest after a dose goes up. The low-sugar signs above matter most if you also take insulin.
Does Montville MedSpa offer both medicines? Yes, and which one, if either, suits you is settled at your consultation.
Is there a Saturday appointment? Yes, from 9 am until 1 pm.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
Kristen is truly exceptional — she goes above and beyond in every way. I honestly don’t think I’ll ever find anyone who matches her level of excellence. I’ve had several Vivace microneedling treatments with her, and she was incredibly thorough and meticulous every time. Her follow-up care is just as impressive. I’m a very cautious person when it comes to these treatments and I ask a lot of questions, and she always responds with patience, professionalism, and genuine care. It’s clear she takes pride in her work. I highly, highly recommend her!
