Four lights, four different jobs

“Laser” gets used for almost anything a MedSpa does with light, but the devices at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center are not interchangeable. Each is chosen for a particular problem, and knowing which does what makes your consultation quicker.

• MOXI by Sciton, for texture, fine lines and sun damage. A fractional laser that places tiny zones of controlled heat in the skin, prompting it to renew itself and build collagen. Numbing cream may be applied first. Most people are back to their usual routine within three to five days, and the improvement keeps building over the following weeks.
• BroadBand Light (BBL) by Sciton, for sunspots, freckles and redness. A spectrum of light whose wavelengths are adjusted to the concern, with a built-in cooling system for comfort. Downtime is typically little or none.
• Limelight by Cutera, for brown spots and visible veins. An intense pulsed light (IPL) device aimed at pigmented and vascular marks such as age spots, rosacea redness and small veins on the face. Most people describe the sensation as a mild stinging or snapping.
• Laser hair removal, for unwanted hair. The laser finds the pigment in each hair and heats the follicle while sparing the skin around it. A session usually takes 30 to 45 minutes, and treatments are booked as a series spaced weeks apart.

Before and after a light treatment

Light asks a little of you in return. Before BBL you may be told to keep out of strong sun and stop certain skin-care products for a few days. Before laser hair removal, shave the area a few days ahead and put the wax and tweezers away for six weeks, because the laser needs the follicle in place to find it. Afterwards, sunscreen and gentle products are the common thread; after hair removal you will also be asked to avoid sun, saunas and hot baths for several days and to keep make-up and fragrance off the area for 24 hours.

Who does the work

Laser treatments are overseen by the practice’s founder, Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, and performed by licensed medical estheticians Kristen Marucci and Shannon Glinsky, both of whom carry out MOXI, BBL, Limelight IPL and laser hair removal. During laser hair removal, everyone in the room wears laser-rated eyewear.

Neighbors with a shared past

Riverdale and Montville were both carved out of Pequannock Township, Montville in 1867 and Riverdale in 1923, and the quickest road between them still runs through it. Follow the Boulevard through Pompton Plains and then Jacksonville Road to Main Road in Towaco, about 11 minutes without traffic.
