Why there is a second appointment

Filler shows a change before you leave the chair, but that first look is not the finished result. Swelling hides it for days to two weeks, and beneath the eyes the settled look can take one to four weeks to appear. What the review looks at

• Balance from every side. Your face is checked from several angles and set beside any photographs taken at your consultation.
• Movement. You talk, smile and frown, so your provider can see the gel moving with your expressions rather than against them.
• Anything still settling. A little unevenness while hyaluronic acid beds in is normal, and this is the visit where it is put right.
• Touch-ups. Any small addition is made now, once the true result can be seen.

Between the two visits

Keep your hands off the treated area for three to six hours, and leave hard exercise alone for 24 to 48 hours. For the first day, skip alcohol and strong sun, along with blood-thinning medicine unless a doctor has prescribed it, in which case ask them before changing anything. Any mild swelling, redness or bruising tends to clear in one to three days, helped along by an ice pack. Do not wait for the review if swelling or pain worsens after the second or third day, if a fever or spreading redness suggests infection, or if lumps or unevenness are still there after two weeks; call the office. For any difficulty breathing, call 911.

The year that follows

Hyaluronic acid is broken down gradually, so a result is maintained rather than bought once. Most of these fillers last 6 to 18 months: lips use them up fastest, while the cheeks and jawline hold on longest, and Juvéderm Voluma can last 18 to 24 months in the cheeks. A common rhythm is a fine-tuning visit every four to six months, a fuller touch-up every nine to twelve, and the under-eye area every six to twelve. Should you ever change your mind, an enzyme called hyaluronidase dissolves the gel.
