Red is not one problem
A face can look red for quite different reasons, and each one points to a different treatment. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center a licensed medical esthetician starts by working out which kind you have:
- Flushing that fades. Redness that rises and settles again can make small vessels look more prominent while it lasts.
- Fine red lines that stay. A vessel still visible once the flush has gone is more likely a lasting change. These facial spider veins, called telangiectasias, often gather around the nose, cheeks and chin, and sun, genetics, age and hormonal shifts can all play a part.
- An overall pink cast, sometimes with the redness of rosacea.
- Inflamed breakouts, where the redness travels with the spots.
- Skin that reacts, stinging or flaring when a new product goes on.
Matching the redness to the tool
- Limelight by Cutera. An IPL photofacial whose pulses of broad-spectrum light are aimed at vascular and pigmented marks, visible veins and rosacea redness included. Settings are adjusted to your skin type, and most people feel a mild stinging or snapping.
- Sciton’s BroadBand Light (BBL). Wavelengths tuned to the concern, redness among them, with a built-in cooling system and typically little or no downtime. You may be asked to avoid strong sun and pause certain products for a few days beforehand.
- The HydraFacial. Non-abrasive and gentle enough for sensitive skin, and LED light can be added to soothe inflammation and redness.
- The acne facial with blue light. Where breakouts are the cause, blue light brings an anti-inflammatory effect, so there is less redness and soreness as well as fewer spots.
Keeping it calmer
Treating the vessels you can see does not stop new ones forming later, so everyday habits carry real weight: broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, a hat outdoors, gentle products if your skin is sensitive, and learning what sets off your own flushing. Bring the names of any prescription creams, and any products your skin has reacted to, to the first visit.
Who treats you
Light and laser treatments are carried out by licensed medical estheticians Kristen Marucci and Shannon Glinsky and overseen by the practice’s founder, Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD. Veins on the legs are a separate matter, handled through the practice’s vein treatments.
The road from Woodland Park
Leave the borough by Browertown Road for Route 46 west, switch to Route 23 north, then follow Mountainview Boulevard onto Route 202 through Lincoln Park to Main Road in Towaco. Allow about 18 minutes without traffic for the nine and a half miles.
Woodland Park clients ask
How many sessions will it take? That depends on what is behind the redness and how much of it there is, so the number is worked out at your consultation.
Can I have a light treatment before an event? BBL typically leaves little or no downtime, but its improvements build gradually over the following weeks, so start well ahead.
Are you open on Saturdays? Yes, from 9 am to 1 pm.
