When the job is done standing up
Plenty of work never involves a chair: a hospital floor, a classroom, a salon, a kitchen, a stockroom. A day like that makes itself felt in particular places by evening, the soles of the feet, the calves, the lower back and the shoulders that did the carrying. At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center a massage can be built around exactly those places, and Maryann Constantino, LMT, the practice’s licensed massage therapist, asks where the day landed before she begins.
Putting the session together
- Deep tissue, 60 or 90 minutes, for the tightness that repetitive physical demands build into calves, hips and back. Ninety minutes leaves time to reach the legs as well as the back without hurrying, and a little soreness the next day is normal.
- Swedish, 60 or 90 minutes, when the main complaint is plain physical fatigue and you would rather come away loose than worked over.
- Reflexology, an add-on, with pressure applied to points on the feet, which the practice offers for balance and stress relief.
- Hot stones, an add-on, warming tired muscles so tension and soreness ease more readily.
- Trigger point therapy, a 30-minute add-on, for one knot, between the shoulder blades perhaps, that keeps coming back.
Each add-on is an additional cost, and more than one can share a session.
When the legs are saying something else
Tired legs after a shift are one thing. Legs that ache, swell around the ankles by evening or cramp at night can point to the veins rather than the muscles, and that calls for an examination before a massage. The practice treats leg veins too, beginning with a consultation and a diagnostic evaluation; see vein treatments. Lymphatic drainage, a gentle 60-minute massage, may help with some kinds of swelling, but only once an individual assessment says it suits you.
Tell Maryann first
With legs on the list, one question matters more than usual: have you ever had a blood clot? Mention that, any blood thinner, a pregnancy, osteoporosis and any recent injury or surgery, because each changes how firm the pressure should be. Then drink some water, keep the meal before light, and come a few minutes early for the paperwork.
From Woodland Park
From the borough, Route 46 west and Route 23 north lead to Mountainview Boulevard and the Boonton Turnpike, Route 202, which enters Towaco as Main Road. Roughly nine and a half miles, about 18 minutes without traffic, so the drive home afterwards is a short one.
Woodland Park clients ask
Can a session fit around shift work? Tuesdays run until 7 pm and Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm; on the other weekdays the first appointments are at 9.
Should deep tissue hurt? Strong is right; sharp is not. Say so and the pressure comes down.
Is massage only for people being treated for pain? No, although anyone already in the practice’s pain management care can add massage in the same building.
Help choosing is in Swedish or deep tissue: which should you book?, and the whole menu is on the massage therapy page.
