A program for both, and a vocabulary to match
At Montville MedSpa & Pain Center, hormone replacement therapy is a program for men and women alike. A first consultation brings a stream of abbreviations and clinical terms with it, and every one of them is easier to weigh once you know what it means. These are the words you are most likely to hear, defined the way the practice uses them.
A short glossary
- HRT. Hormone replacement therapy: putting back hormones your body no longer makes in sufficient amounts. For women that usually means estrogen and progesterone; for men, mainly testosterone.
- TRT. Testosterone replacement therapy, the men’s half of the program, offered only to men whose lab work confirms a low level.
- Perimenopause. The run-up to menopause, often when hot flashes, broken sleep or mood changes first appear. Women are treated from this stage onward.
- Menopause and post-menopause. The stage itself and the years after it, both covered by the program. Some women carry on long term; others use therapy for a phase and taper off later.
- Labs. The blood work done before anything is prescribed, then repeated for as long as you are on therapy. Results are read beside your symptoms, since two people with an identical number do not always need the same plan.
- Functional range. What the dose aims for: a normal range in which you feel and work well, rather than the highest figure a laboratory can print.
- Injection or topical. The two ways the hormones are given. An injection allows exact doses that are simple to adjust in small steps; a topical cream or gel is applied to the skin each day.
- Contraindication. Anything that makes treatment unsafe. A personal or family history of hormone-sensitive cancer, blood clots or certain heart and circulation conditions can be one, which is why your history is taken first.
- Compounded preparation. A hormone made up specially rather than supplied as a standard product. Some insurance plans pay for lab testing and certain prescription hormones but not for compounded ones, so your insurer is the one to ask.
Who explains all of this in person
Every plan is overseen by Dr. Donna D’Alessio, MD, who owns the practice and holds board certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. Nurse practitioner Tanya Santoro, NP-C, whose Master of Science in Adult Health Nursing comes from Fairleigh Dickinson University, specializes in hormone therapy with a particular focus on testosterone. Consultations and reviews happen face to face in Towaco, never through a chat window.
Getting to your reviews
Hormone care means coming back for labs and follow-ups, so the route matters. From Woodland Park, Route 46 west and Route 23 north lead to Mountainview Boulevard and Route 202, which carries you through Lincoln Park to 624 Main Road, about 18 minutes without traffic.
Woodland Park patients ask
When might I notice a change? Energy, mood and sleep often move first, within two to four weeks; libido, body composition and mental clarity tend to take two to three months.
Can I check my symptoms before booking? The 30-second hormone quiz is a quick first step, though it is never a diagnosis.
Is there an evening appointment? On Tuesdays, until 7 pm, and Saturday mornings run from 9 to 1.
