A treatment best understood in figures

Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved forms of botulinum toxin type A, and they work in the same way: they keep acetylcholine, the chemical messenger a nerve sends, from reaching the small muscle that creases your skin, so that muscle rests and the line above it softens. Most of what people want to know before booking comes down to a handful of figures, so here they are, in the order you would meet them.

The numbers

• 2002. The year Botox was first approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, after being developed for eyelid spasms and excessive sweating.
• 18. The age from which adults are considered for treatment, provided they are in good general health with nothing that rules a neurotoxin out.
• Up to 7. Days before your visit during which alcohol and blood thinners are best avoided. A prescribed blood thinner is paused only if the doctor who prescribed it agrees.
• 10 to 20. Minutes for the injections themselves, through a fine-gauge needle. Most people describe each one as a quick pinch.
• 24. Hours to keep your fingers off the treated area. Beyond that there is no downtime.
• 3 to 5. Days until the first softening shows.
• 10 to 14. Days until the full effect has settled, which is why two weeks is the sensible minimum ahead of a wedding or photographs.
• 3 to 4. Months most results hold before movement gradually returns. Leaving at least three months between touch-ups is the usual advice.

You will not find a unit count on this page, because the dose is never read off a chart.
