When nothing hurts, but nothing lets go
Not every massage is about a knot or an injury. Sometimes the problem is that you cannot switch off: sleep is light, your shoulders sit somewhere near your ears, and nothing in particular aches. That is the situation a relaxing session at Montville MedSpa & Pain Center is built for, and it calls for a different hour from one spent working on a stubborn muscle.
The Swedish hour
A Swedish massage uses long, flowing strokes with light to moderate pressure, aimed at calming the nervous system and helping circulation rather than digging into one spot. Breathing slows, the jaw unclenches, and plenty of people drift off partway through, which is entirely welcome. It comes in 60 or 90 minutes; for unwinding, an hour is usually enough. It is also the natural choice for a first massage, because you find out what pressure you like without bracing for it.
The quieter add-ons
Each of these is worked into your session at an additional cost, and more than one can be combined:
- Reflexology — pressure applied to points on the feet that correspond to organs and systems of the body.
- Reiki — a gentle, energy-based technique, often paired with massage, for relaxation and emotional release.
- Hot stones — smooth, heated stones that warm the muscles so they loosen more readily.
- CBD oil — hemp-derived CBD oil worked into the massage for an extra layer of calm.
- Scalp massage (craniosacral therapy) — attention to the head, neck and spine, for releasing tension and clearing the head.
If gentler still is needed
Lymphatic drainage massage, a 60-minute session, uses soft, rhythmic strokes to encourage lymph fluid to move. It may help with certain kinds of swelling and with recovery after some surgeries, and an individual assessment decides first whether it is right for you.
Your therapist
Sessions are with Maryann Constantino, LMT, a licensed massage therapist whose focus is holistic as well as therapeutic, aimed at physical, mental and spiritual balance. She listens before she starts and adjusts as she goes. Regular massage may help reduce stress and anxiety and support better sleep, which is why some clients keep a standing appointment.
A short drive home
From Pompton Lakes, the Turnpikes lead to the Boulevard through Pompton Plains and on to Jacksonville Road, which ends at Main Road in Towaco: about nine miles, close to 15 minutes without traffic. Not a long way to drive back feeling loose.
Pompton Lakes clients ask
How should I prepare? Wear something comfortable, drink some water, skip a heavy meal just before, and arrive a few minutes early for paperwork. Mention any medical conditions, injuries or recent surgery.
Will I be sore the next day? After Swedish massage, most people feel loose and sleepy rather than worked over. Deep tissue is the one that can leave a day of soreness.
Is there an evening slot? Yes, on Tuesdays until 7 pm, and Saturdays run from 9 am to 1 pm.

What Our Patients Say About Us
★★★★★
I've had countless massages over the years, but none have ever truly addressed the root of my lower back pain until I saw MaryAnn. Her deep understanding of anatomy and her ability to pinpoint exactly where the pain was coming from made all the difference. Not only was the massage incredibly effective, but it was also one of the most relaxing experiences. Hands down, the best massage I've ever received. I HIGHLY recommend MaryAnn to anyone looking for real relief and true expertise!
