Its whole job is lifting the brows, which it does every time you listen hard, show surprise or try to see a little better. Why the forehead needs a careful hand

Because the frontalis is the muscle that raises your brows, treating it is a balancing act between softer lines and brows that still do their job. The answer is strategic dosing: enough Botox or Dysport, both FDA-approved botulinum toxin type A, to soften the creases, placed so the brows can still lift and your face still reads as yours. Because the muscle is quieter rather than switched off, you keep your expressions.

The forehead is also rarely treated in isolation. The frown lines between the brows come from the corrugator and procerus muscles, which pull the brows down and in, while the frontalis pulls them up, and crow’s feet fan out from the ring of muscle around each eye. So your injector watches the whole upper face move before deciding where each injection goes.

What the first two weeks look like

• The appointment itself: about 10 to 20 minutes of small injections with a fine-gauge needle, each one felt as a quick pinch.
• That day: no downtime, but leave your forehead unrubbed for 24 hours. A little redness or a small bruise can appear and usually settles within hours to a few days.
• The first couple of days: some people feel a headache or a heaviness in the treated area, which normally fades within 24 to 48 hours.
• Days 3 to 5: the lines begin to soften.
• Days 10 to 14: the result has fully settled, and this is the fair point to judge it.
